Photoshop: Editing with levels
Hello all,
This morning I came back from my trip to Zurich. Currently I am looking at my photos and I am making a selection if it. I already edited one photo. Normally I do this in Adobe Lightroom but now I have edited the photo in Adobe Photoshop, using the 'levels'. Okay, after that did some sharpening .

Could you guys give me some feedback about this way of editing and how I did do this?
Kind regards,
Ruud

Re: Photoshop: Editing with levels
to be honest I think the edited one is more red/pink in the whites than the unedited one....

Yup..Polecat wrote:to be honest I think the edited one is more red/pink in the whites than the unedited one....
The white balance is a bit too warm to my liking.
Furthermore, the image seems a bit oversharpened too. Look at the registration on the rear fuselage.
In general, I do what you do, adjust levels in order to get the greyish cast out of the way.
Hans.

Re: Photoshop: Editing with levels
Thank you both for the comments In the mean time I have edited another:
I hope this one is better, but I think I am missing some contrast or something like that. It looks like the photo has some kind of white "waas" (don't know the English word for it ) over the entire image.

voor beide opnamen: hoeveel verscherpt?
en
probeer eens (PS, cs5):
ALT A-A-N-
of
ALT A-A-O
Eventueel spelen middels Alt E-E (met een xx-%)
en laat maar zien wat je R v. Bakt.

It's called 'mist'!Flyboeing wrote: I hope this one is better, but I think I am missing some contrast or something like that. It looks like the photo has some kind of white "waas" (don't know the English word for it ) over the entire image.
On a more serious note, do you check the Histogram while you edit photos? Some values on the left side (dark values) are indeed missing..

Re: Photoshop: Editing with levels
Flyboy, you nailed a Japanese plane I didn't see despite two trips to Japan in the last two years
Editing wise, I think you blew the highlights on top of the fuselage (see the other poster's remarks about histogram!) on this one. That's the biggest problem with this 747 I think.
Care to post the original, I would like to do some playing.
Hans.

- radius: 0,5 pixels
Ik snap alleen niet wat je met ALT A-A-N bedoeld Ik gebruik welliswaar een Mac met CS4.
@DJdeRidder,
Thank you for the translation I didn't open the histogram, but when I play with the levels, ain't that the histogram? Maybe a very stupid question....
Here is the original file (4288 × 2848; 5,7MB):

Re: Photoshop: Editing with levels
Histogram adjusted with pointers to start en finish of the graph in PS CS3, some noise removed with Neat Image. No sharpening done!
Question, the file was in JPG. Do you do in-camera sharpening as the original does seem to show white edges here and there along contrasting colours and such (titles/serial).
What do you think?

Re: Photoshop: Editing with levels
yes, I do in-camera sharpening, but I think it is a little bit to much. I will set it one step back. Looks very nice

Re: Photoshop: Editing with levels
Glad you like it and good to se you're getting the hang of it too!. I would leave in camera sharpening off entirely. Much better to do that with editing software like Photoshop. Once artefacts are there, they're not going away anymore.Flyboeing wrote:yes, I do in-camera sharpening, but I think it is a little bit to much. I will set it one step back. Looks very nice

This would be my version (just Lightroom):
You are right, sorry haven't used Photoshop for image editing for a very long time..Flyboeing wrote: @DJdeRidder,

These were my settings:
If you copy these settings to your image, you should get the same result (apart from the cropping and dust spot removing).
