Holiday in Vietnam, W&R, gate Nha Trang & HCMC

Post by stipjes »

Me and my girfriend left rainy Europe for a 3 week holiday to Vietnam. Spotting is not the goal but I will try to visit the most important W&R sites. I started yesterday in a too hot Hanoi. 35 degrees and humid.... I am getting to old for these temperatures ;-). First on the list was the Bảo Tàng Quân đội (Military History Museum) close to the "Old Quarter" neigbourhood and within walking distance of the tourist area. There are a few a/c on display and they can be nicely photographed from the base of an old tower.

In this pile of metal and aluminium should be parts of B-52, A-37, F-111, F6F and a F-4B..... I dont recognise it so I don't write it.....
Image

There was also a MiG.21 preserved but more will follow so I did not PS it.
Back in the hotel I noticed that some other a/c where stored at the back :-(...... I have an old WMOOS with me, I hope I will miss not too many wrecks.
Vietnam is a nice country so far (but hot). It is relative clean and has many friendly people. Traffic is very busy but people are relaxed (lets wait after this weekend)....

Nice pics and better a bit than the soaking wet weather we had.....do not forget the other IL14 in Hanoi.....

should you go and see the Yak40 in Ho Chi Minh here is the address.
try weekends as during weekdays too many bikes etc parked next to plane.

Yak 40 is located at 18A Duong Cong Hoa.
This is in fact 5 min drive from head office of Caa which is located at main road to /from airport, a bit closer to airport coming from city centre. www.hocvienhangkhong.edu.vn

good luck and have a nice holiday in such a friendly country !

This is a civil one. I don't think Patrick is interested in this one.

But other tips are more than welcome as I will visit Vietnam next week.

Holiday in Vietnam, Casa flying (and more W&R)

Post by stipjes »

After the weekend in Hanoi we went hiking in the mountains (Sapa) and were on a little cruise in Halong Bay. Both regions are unbelievable beautifull but had no strong internet. I could not publish my pics Sunday the 6th. This day I took I first went back to the War museum to catch the other a/c that I "forgot" (Chinook, 2 MiGs and an A-37). It must have been the heat.....

A bit further west the "B-52 victory museum can be found with an unknown B-52 :-( and MiG.21.

From here it is a 15 min taxi ride to the Vietnamese AF museum

Today I saw some operational stuff but the quality of the pics is not too good. Time was short and the weather was bad. Next time I will be here in the dry season :-).
From the hotel I took a pic of Casa, I did not even know Vietnam has them.
It came in early in the morning.
Image

The only activity on the platform was a Su.22 being towed. To get an idea here is a heavily cropped pic:

From Hanoi we flew to Da Nang where some shelters had 3 MiG.21's each. Also some Su.22 where present. I don't know if they also fly from here or if they are stored here (and a cropped pic):

Patrick PM me if you need a good location for Da Nang landing shots! Yes they received the CN235 recently. My experience at Da Nang was that the 21's usually fly very early in the morning and again in the evening, but the helos (including Kamovs!) fly throughout the day.
Rome has Bufalotta, Arizona has alotta BUFF..

Small correction, this is a C295M.
They have already three of these transport aircraft.

@ Hans, Thanks. I prefer an Antonov in stead of a new Casa :-(. Yesterday I saw an Antonov landing when I was lying on the beach :-(.
@ Trabanti, thanks for the spot you mentioned. It was still there, it was great, including the military that eat there  .... It looks like the Sukhoi's replaced the MiG's?
@ Thijs, Mango Room is off the Bucket list ;-)

After I got up very early and I got my best spottersday of 2015! It was not easy and I had some troubles. I will put a report in Take Off!
