14-11-2016: After Aviation Nation I headed up north. After crossing two state lines and one time zone boundary I ended up in St George, Utah. I spent the Monday morning at the new airport (only a few years old).

17. One of my personal goals for this trip was to catch some Ameriflight planes. In total I scored three different types. This is number 1. Thanks to the airport ops for removing the hideous orange cones. For some reason these little freighters are always surrounded by them.
Image

18. The main reason to go to this airport is the stunning scenery.
Image

19. Biggest surprise of the trip: an opeartional Beechcraft Starship. There are only a handful of these flying around.
Image

20. The biggest aircraft type you will find at this airport.
Image

21. My spoting skills let me down on this one. The aircraft type turned out to be a Syberjet SJ30 and the owner is the manager of a Vegas strip club called Deja Vu Showgirls.

16-11-2016: A day of spotting in the Californian desert. The weather was cloudy in the morning, but fortunately that changed for the better in the afternoon.

31. Barstow-Daggett with just a little bit of sunshine.
Image

32. Some sneaky stuff at Apple Valley
Image

33. And some less sneaky stuff
Image

34. I caught this beauty in perfect light conditions at Victorville, just before a sand/dust storm came rolling in.

Although this time I spent only one day in the Golden State, my third visit to Cali in three years resulted once again in some great photos. I am already looking forward to my fourth ;)

Very nice report Joost, I like the mix of mil/civ and the choppers and bizzers in your report, we seem to have the same 'focus' (although I skip Robinsons).

Just a question, what is so sneaky about the two bizjets at Apple Valley? Both are registered to Classic Rotors Ramona, which is a helicopter museum at Ramona CA. Maybe they will trade these for choppers? The Lear is a former C-21A obviously.

Thank you, yes the variety and amount of aircraft combined with excellent weather conditions (blue skies but not too high temperatures) makes this SW USA area one of the best spotting areas in the world (at least during the winter months).

A classic Gulfstream (missing part of its wing) and a Learjet with both a civ and mil reg parked so close together just seemed a bit suspicious to me ;). I wonder what a rotor museum is going to do with these fixed wing aircraft.

Hi, I happened to be in SoCal myself first week of January. Weather was, for the area, not the best (actually the locals said it was the worst weather in 40 years). It was a family holiday but I managed to escape a few hours for some spotting at San Diego International, North Island (from the wonderful Coronado Beach), a few museums (USS Midway, Flying Leathernecks museum @ Miramar) and a some short stops at Santa Monica and Montgomery Field. Very nice to have so many military and civil airports close to each other.

17-11-2016: After Cali it was time to go to the fourth state of the trip: Arizona. First stop was Kingman where we got an airside tour.

37. Then on to the Grand Canyon. Nice surprise at Valle

38. Grand Canyon National Park airport, surrounded by forests, has a nice mix of fixed-wing and rotary wing aircraft. After this Be1900 we focussed on the helicopters for the remainder of the day. The next morning we would chase the other airplanes.

Temperatures were just below freezing level this day. Not the first thing that comes to mind when spotting in Arizona ;)

45. Then we headed back to some warmer areas. We ended the day at Kingman and did some spotting from outside the fence. What a fantastic way to end the day with this third and final Ameriflight plane. Great light, great scenery.
