Forum rules
This is the forum to share your recent aviation photos with the rest of the community, being photos not older than six months at the moment of topic opening. Theme-based topics, not about recent events, should go into the sub-forum. Although we will not screen beforehand, we reserve the right to delete any images, especially if clearly unsharp or otherwise low in quality. For more information on how to upload you images, check this post. In topic titles, please use airfield names in stead of just codes, and be clear about what kind of photos your viewers can expect (e.g. CIV/MIL, location etc.). Finally, bring any photo criticism understandable and to the point, not cynical or offensive! Simultaneously, do not feel offended by criticism per se, but simply explain your motives, taste et cetera, or ignore if you wish so. |

Wooow great pics everyone. Looking at the surroundings most of these shots were taken at a time when I was just getting into planes and stuff. So I was probably a few months old. The old SPL scenery is a nice bonus.
But Ger do you know what the strange ´fin´ is under the tail on this bird you shot??

I always say a boy can learn more at an airport than at any school.

Hi Thermal
That fin is not so strange, early in its development the 707 had directional stability problems. This extra fin was therefore added under the tail.
If you have a good look at the PIA and ELAL on this page they also have the fin.
All 720's also had this fin because of the shorter fuselage which means a smaller "momentum" force from the tail.
(See the Air Malta 720 and Aerneflug on page 2 of this subject).
Originally all 707's and also the KC135's had a smaller (less high) tail. This was later changed to the model we all know now.
A lot of the KC135's received the lager tail from retired civil 707's in a special refitting programme (they also got their engines),
that is why there were so many retired civil 707's at Davis Monthan.
