AMS - UK market Developments 2012

Post by XYZ »

Each year, I post a review of the AMS-UK market developments over the previous year. As the United Kingdom is Schiphol's most important market, it is interesting to see how individual routes perform.

Herewith an overview of the AMS-UK passenger market for the year 2012.

The year 2012 has seen a good year for Schiphol's most important market, with continued recovery from the economic crisis. The UK's demand for air travel has strenghtened and many routes did well. However, some routes continue to be weak, several routes continue their decline.

Total Market - AMS-UK-AMS:
- 2012 = 7.403.806 + 3,4%
- 2011 = 7.158.000 +10,1%
- 2010 = 6.484.800 -0.9%
- 2009 = 6.544.135 -9,6%
- 2008 = 7.232.400 -7,3%
- 2007 = 7.801.718 + 1%

A number of routes set new passenger records:

1. Southend was a new route which opened in April 2012, it saw 105.000 pax in the 9 months of operation.
2. London Gatwick 667.175 +7,9%
3. Manchester 669.670 +9,4%
4. Edinburgh = 566.919 +1,4%
5. London City = 387,114 +5,6%
6. Glasgow = 371.750 +24,4%
7. Bristol = 310.122 +7,3%
8. Inverness = 26.280 +339%
9. Belfast Harbour = 14.028 +336%

But some routes continue to loose passengers:

1. East Midlands 54.606 = minus 48,1% closure of route following closure of BMIBaby
2. Liverpool 246.467 = minus 27,4% - KLC withdrew from this route in March 2012.
3. Stansted 292.226 = minus 13,4% - due to opening of EZY route to Southend and resulting reduction in frequency.
4. Cardiff 111.960 = minus 8%, 5th year of falling pax. numbers.
