Japan Trip May 2011 - The Sage Remains *Last update

When all of you saw some Tigers and Turkish delights we, my brother and I, payed for the first time a visit to wonderful Japan from 10 May tot 3 June.
Main reason was photographing japanese self-defense force aviation, but also enjoy the sights in Japan.
So we decided to pay visits to the following airbases: Hyakuri, Kasumigaura, Akeno, Metabaru, Nyutabaru, Kanoya, Atsugi and Iruma.

We will start with some shots from Hyakuri (10-12 May), weather was rainy but still they did fly, though as the security told us not with that "many".
During these 3 days we spend most of our time at the mid-runway spot. We tried to get to the famous eastern taxi track spot..though the gate was closed
and the gate-keeper didn't want to answer the phone.The one time we got an answer there was nobody to speak to in English...... those japanese...
In the end we counted 15 movements the first day and 19 the second, which is according to the security not that many..

Regarding the photos, we will post both our pictures together to prevent too much chaos and to keep watching/following the topic easy.

After 2 days at Hyakuri, the next morning we tried our luck at Kasumigaura, on arrival around 11 o'clock a OH6D came in for landing and a CH-47J hoverd in the background.
After a few minutes the Ch-47J landed aswell and after that not further flying activities :? were observed.
Around 1pm we drove again to hyakuri where we were met by heavy rain and 4 landing F4s, before drving back to Narita to return the car.

On 16 may we drove to Akeno were our dreams came true!! If you thought Gilze-Rijen was great... then Akeno exceeds your wildest fantasies! :twisted:
we started at spot 5, which resulted in: choppers up to 10 meters, sliding Cobra's and Hueys falling out of the sky.
When when sun light conditions became too bad, we drove to spot 1, this was great again, hovering cobras and apaches at 10 meters and other
low flying choppers joining the Akeno circuit madness. And we watched it all joyfully!

Unfortunately we can not post the totall experience as there are just too many good shots and opportunities, but we like to give you a small taste of it anyways.
This selection is from day 1 and 2 a second part of the Akeno madness will follow.

Great helicopter shots, I just cannot say otherwise. Those Phantoms are nice, but I do prefer the choppers! Very, very nice.

Wow, incredible shots...I was already stunned by the Phantom shots posted last week, but these choppers are at least as good.

By the way, first time ever I see a shot of a Japanese Enstrom.

Could be true. This is the first of 30 new TH-480Bs to be delivered to the JGSDF by 2014 for training purposes.
It was test flying at Utsunomiya before and recently transferred to Akeno for operational use.
I do prefer the standard camo scheme above this blue/gold scheme though :|

As promised part 2 of our Akeno experience.
After a day full of helicopter activity, around 5pm some helicopters where still patiently waiting at the platforms.
While others where towed and pushed back into their hangars, some where left behind and even a couple new helos where pushed outside!!
The Chinook waited all day, and was even turned around, because... It was time for night flying activities!!!
Just at the perfect timing, around 6pm, the flights one by one went out while the sun was setting behind the base.
A Ch47J, Enstrom, AH1 and 2 OH6s went out for night flights. Some stayed in the pattern while others left for a longer flight.
We left eventually around 8pm, just because it became too dark.... helicopters where still flying though. And with the Kasumiguara experience in mind, this was refreshing!!
