21-Oct-2010
October 21: Sharjah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates is to get a new 4,000 metre, Dh500 million (€97 million) CAT III runway.
Work is expected to be completed within 24 months, after which the existing runway will be renovated.
Peripheral projects include holding lounges, an air-bridge and additional parking, with the possibility of new feeder roads to the airport currently under discussion.
The need for expansion has been fuelled by the success of flagship carrier Air Arabia, which currently serves 65 routes in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe from three hubs in Sharjah, Alexandria and Casablanca.
