Nineteen fatalities reported after Congolese crash

By David Kaminski-Morrow

Several fatalities are being reported from an apparent aircraft crash in western Democratic Republic of Congo, although initial details are sketchy.

Unconfirmed media reports suggest that the carrier is Filair, which uses aircraft such as the Let L-410 turboprop.
The aircraft type involved is unconfirmed.

But media reports from Kinshasa, citing police sources, are stating that 19 passengers have been killed in the accident, and that there are two survivors.

Reports say the aircraft came down at around 12:00 while operating to Bandundu in the west of the country.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is subject to a blanket blacklisting by the European Commission.

DR Congo plane crash in Bandundu 'kills 19'

A plane has crashed in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing 19 people, officials say.

Two people survived the crash, the police chief in Bandundu province told AP news agency.

A UN spokesman told Reuters the plane had crashed into a house near Bandundu town's airstrip.

DR Congo, the size of western Europe and with few roads after decades of civil war, has one of the world's worst air safety records.

UN spokesman Madnodje Mounoubai said a number of people on board and on the ground had been killed.

The police said that 19 bodies had been pulled from the crash site.

According to AP, the plane was operated by the local air carrier Filair and was en route to Bandundu from the centre of the country.

It was then due to continue to the capital, Kinshasa.

Danny Philemotte
By Dave on Thursday, Aug 26th 2010 08:39Z

Danny Philemotte (owner of the company) was flying the plane and sadly perished yesterday.
Danny was my Dad's cousin.

He was a great chap, very easy going, and always ready to help people out.

He was one of the last true 'Congolese Belgians' and a real adventurer.

He was put to death by firing squad by Kabila Snr's government several times, but thankfully they never pulled the trigger...although this all seems irrelevant now.

Anyway, a quiet prayer for those that try to make a living in horrid conditions and in the pit of hell (yet beautiful) country that is DRC/Zaire.

RIP Danny, we'll miss you.

Crash: Filair L410 at Bandundu on Aug 25th 2010, impacted building

By Simon Hradecky, created Wednesday, Aug 25th 2010 19:35Z, last updated Wednesday, Aug 25th 2010 23:29Z

A Filair LET L-410, registration 9Q-CCN performing a flight from Kinshasa Ndolo to Bandundu (Democratic Republic of Congo) with 18 passengers and 3 crew, crashed into a house about 2km from Bandundu Airport following a go-around at around 13:00L (12:00Z).

19 bodies including crew were recovered, 2 passengers were rescued alive, one of the survivors died later however.

The provincial governor said, that the LET L-410 had gone around, turned and impacted a house at the edge of the city of Bandundu about 2km (1.1.nm) from the airport, the residents of the house fortunately were outside the building.

The owner of the airline was at the controls of the aircraft, that apparently ran out of fuel.

Autorities confirmed that one of the survivors succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Filair owned two Let L-410 registrations 9Q-CCN, 9Q-CDN and an Antonov AN-24 registration 9Q-CTR.
