"Buried" in the Geilenkirchen thread elsewhere on this forum I stumbled upon this link:
http://www.limburger.nl/article/2009051 ... 57495/1056" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
short translation: 707 training aircraft (the TCAs) to be retired in 2012 , major runway renovation works in that same year, Geilenkirchen to be closed for six months during that time. Costs will be in the region of 10 to 20 million euro.
The runway will not be lengthened by the way, and certainly not in the easterly direction.
There is also serious talk of permanently stationing seven AWACS in the Middle East as part of the "Afghanistan effort".
