Uniform list of military operators' abbreviations?

Post by Hermolaus »

Hello!

Is there any place in the Scramble website, Forum or Wiki where one can find a uniform list of abbreviations of formal names of military aviation operators throughout the world? I would very much appreciate this kind of list, especially a standarized version (could be only for the purpose of Scarmble users), since there is a little doubt sometimes which operator does the mentioned abbreviation mean.

E.g. I met an "IAF" abbreviation. The author ment "Israeli Air Force". I thought of "Italian Air Force". At last it appeared that the proper abbrev. for Israeli AF is "IDF" (for "Israel Defence Force") and for the Italian AF is "AMI" (for "Aeronautica Militare Italiana"), while "IAF" stands for "Indian Air Force"...

One more thing. What is the link between the abbreviation of an air force and a callsign it uses? Are there any list of callsigns in use by each country's air force? I would also appreciate such a list very much!

E.g. Common abbreviation for "Polish Air Force" I used to meet at the Internet is "PolAF". While almost every military a/c (excluding F-16s) I can hear on my radio has a callsign of "PLFxxx" (x stands for a digit). Is it normal that an abbreviation and a callsign of each particular air force differ?

I know the Scramble General Abbreviations list. But I didn't found there what I am looking for. Maybe it is a good moment to make such separate lists? Or maybe I missed something at this forum or at this site in general?...

Hi,

At the moment there is not such a list available on the Scramble site.
But you are free to start one on the Wiki ;-)

Regards,

Hans

Ok, as soon as I find a bit of spare time - I'll do it (hope it'll be tommorow). But expect help from all of you! :)
