The jet trainers were returning from a training mission back to the base. At the time of the events, conditions requiring instrument approach methods prevailed at Jyväskylä Airport.

The department's aircraft approached runway 30 in downwind conditions using the ILS precision instrument approach method. The cloud height in the afternoon was about 300-400 feet and the wind was blowing weakly from the south.

Baana22_Mantyla_1"The first two Hawks landed successfully, but they reported varying and sometimes very slippery conditions along the entire length of the runway. The next two Hawks that landed drifted off the runway. The last pair of Hawks were directed to the reserve field," Colonel Vesa Mäntylä, director of the Air Force School, told Lentoposti.fi.

"The Hawk that landed third drifted off the end of the runway and stopped in the stop net. The Hawk that landed fourth drifted into the snow project to the left side of the runway," continued Colonel Mäntylä.
