I'm looking forward to it. i'm there from Tuesday to Friday late
Re: Zurich (ZRH/LSZH) 2018 CIV/MIL
I'm Jeff from Chicago, a newbie to WEF, only having been to one WEF in 2012. I Will be arriving on my company jet, AAL 767, lol. I work for AAL. I'm there from Tuesday morning until Saturday.
My question is: Do some aircraft fly in exclusively to Dubendorf and Altenrheim and stay there?? Just wondering if it is worth it for a short ride to these airports to spot a dozen or so others that don't do the ZRH-drop-and-reposition.
Looking forward to it. Thanks Mollie, for your tremendous posts from years passed to do some "research" of what to expect.

Generally yes, it is worth it. Not sure if planes really exclusively fly in and out of other airports, but also keep in mind that some planes come and go at night in Zurich. Basel, Dubendorf, Althenrein and others usually do bring in a few that you somehow miss at Zurich. Basel even more so because there you surely do have plenty of traffic that doesn't come to Zurich.

Note on Basel: officially you are not allowed to take a Swiss rental car across the border and Basel is in France.

Everything at Basel can be seen from the Swiss side. You do not need to cross the border into France.

Not really part of ZRH movements, but this statement is incorrect.ehusmann wrote: Note on Basel: officially you are not allowed to take a Swiss rental car across the border and Basel is in France.
EU residents are not allowed to use non-EU registered cars within the EU (with some minor exceptions). This law is in place since 2016 (actually, in the Netherlands Dutch residents aren't allowed to use non-Dutch cars either) and is ment to reduce tax avoidance.
However, Cathay744 is from Chicago, IL, which doesn't qualify him as a EU resident... Hence he should have no problem with this.
OK, that is news to me. As far as I know, the opposite side with the 'large bizjet' hangars is only visible from the French side. Am I wrong? If so, could you provide me with directions?raameagle wrote:Everything at Basel can be seen from the Swiss side. You do not need to cross the border into France.

That's a very interesting clarification. Thanks for that addition.Numbercruncher wrote:EU residents are not allowed to use non-EU registered cars within the EU (with some minor exceptions). They have changed the layout, to get to that spot you need to stay on the Swiss side now (at least since last year). So yes, get off the highway before the border and take the secondary road. However, from my experience not "everything" can be read from there.Numbercruncher wrote:OK, that is news to me. From the civil terminal at Basel (Swiss side), follow the road past Jet Aviation as if you were leaving the airport for the motorway and turn right at the roundabout towards cargo. Just after the green bridge, you can pull over on the right hand side just before a gate to an FBO (please don't block the gate!) and walk back onto the bridge to read aircraft parked outside the Jet hangars on the terminal side. After that, follow the road in the way you were heading and carry on past the end of the runway towards the hangars on the far side. Just before the first hangar, park on left hand side and walk into field to get a good view into that area.
To look onto apron on French side, go into the Terminal and upstairs to the viewing area.

The Swiss car rental companies are well aware of the law, and will rent you an EU-registered car if you are planning to cross the border (check in advance of course).ehusmann wrote:That's a very interesting clarification. When I say "most", I'm talking about the major companies, not "cheapandnastyrentawreck.com"....
