Alitalia is saved. Unions agreed with the CAI offer and AirFrance/KLM is buying 20% of the shares.
Somebody more on this never ending story?

According to "Noordhollands Dagblad" there were two options to save Alitalia, but not yours. First one: it should be bought by some friends of Hugo Chavez, the other one was that they would receive money from Silvio himself. After that CAI would take control and Lufthansa should be granted a minoritystake "to keep Alitalia italian". Lufthansa should only be interested if the unions would shut up.

I have no knowledge on any of this, but I assume, besides the possibility of making it profitable again (which is maybe cheaper than starting all over), you can get cheap slots this way?patrick@tediek.com wrote:Why would an other airline want to save AZ? Wouldn't be cheaper to let them shut down and jump in? When taking over you are talking about heavy debts and company ran by an union.
Very true. Slots, brandname, customers, aircraft etc etc.adz wrote:I have no knowledge on any of this, but I assume, besides the possibility of making it profitable again (which is maybe cheaper than starting all over), you can get cheap slots this way?patrick@tediek.com wrote:Why would an other airline want to save AZ? But also, when taking over an almost bankrupt company (be it an airline, be it a bank), usually the company is first split in parts. The really unhealthy parts are not taken over (and left to rot), while the more or less healthy parts (with the assets mentioned above) are taken over.

Why is Alitalia still able to fly?
The fact that this airline is still flying is due to illegal subsidies from sucessive Italian governments.
The reputation of this airline with the travelling public is poor to say the least.
Nature should be allowed to take it´s course and the Italian taxpayer releived of the burden of funding dinosuars.
In short,Alitalia´s demise(probably inevitable in the long term) will be no bad thing.

I think that this answer depends more on a 'personal' experience then a general one
Source ??.patrick@tediek.com wrote:as the planes are very empty
I can tell you that this is not true, at least for the flight to/from Amsterdam...and what do you call very empty???...141 seats with 10-20 open, 220 seats with 30 open ??.

A well known fact.
Perhape a look at some of the reviews posted on the Skytrax website may be an indicator.
BTW,I read that this airline has been ordered to repay one of the illegal subsudies it received from the Italian government, that's for 300 million Euros.
I see also Alitalia had another 24 hour strike this week,no wonder the travelling public find this carrier to be less than popular. A bit like turkeys voting for Christmas,I suppose.

The new airline will have saved from IATA the older AZ flight code and the future name used by CAI is ALITALIA . About 600 flights will be operated everyday in the first phase, of which 350 by Alitalia and 250 from network of AirOne. Later is planned to go until 700 flights, 50% from Alitalia and 50% from AirOne. Its the 56% market share compared to the today 70%. Alitalia before of the current sweety grounding have operated 800 flights.
If today Alitalia have 156 liners in fleet, 95 are the ones planned to be in service by Jan 12 2009.
CAI will have the AOC when the old Alitalia is transferred to CAI and they'll show to have cash flow for 3 months of operations. They have valued in 240 million € the amopunt of money necessary in the hands of CAI for granting the obligation asked by Italian CAA. These 240 million € must be calculated at net of incomes.
Its planned a short stop in the flight operations from 10pm of Jan 11 2009 to 3-4am on Jan 12 2009 for the necessary transfer of authorizations.
If CAI must pay the negative balance between costs and revenue by Dec 1 2008. It commence when from the closing they have supplied apart first tranche of 100 million € further 24 million €. Further tranches of 14 million € are paid by CAI to Alitalia every week from Dec 13 to Jan 12.
In the meanwhile Alitalia is operating 250 flights and Italian CAA askes to incvrease until 356 over Christmas Time.
Continue the put in storage of Alitalia liners. MD82s and MD11Fs and than B767s will not fly with CAI. Yesterday MD82s I-DAWU "Bologna" with flight number AZA8920 was ferried off to Shannon. This liner property of Power Aircraft Services, I-DAWS and I-DAWC was feeried to Shannon in the past.

Re: Alitalia filing for bankruptcy
This airline now in private hands, held it's first strike this week causing the cancellation of hundreds of flights.
Well done, lemmings, obviously the Italian social security system must pay good benefits for when this airline finally goes under.
Step forward Ryanair...........

Re: Alitalia filing for bankruptcy
the airline going under would have been the best, then you can start and run it the way you want without the unions.
