Bezoekers zijn allen in het kader van oefening Orange Warden die 2 weken duurt, 1e week overdag vliegen, 2e week avondvliegen.

De Koninklijke Luchtmacht oefent van maandag 19 tot en met vrijdag 30 november samen met het Defensie Grondgebonden Luchtverdedigingscommando (DGLC) van de landmacht. Zij beoefenen de verdediging van eenheden, objecten en gebieden vanaf de grond tegen vliegtuigen, helikopters en (laser)geleide raketten.

De luchtverdedigingseenheid oefent vanaf vliegbasis Leeuwarden en de Vliehors Range op Vlieland samen met F-16’s, helikopers en andere vliegtuigen met als doel om het militair optreden van straaljagers, gevechtsleiding en grondgebonden luchtverdediging te trainen.

Het DGLC opereert met geavanceerde wapen- en radarsystemen die worden ingezet om luchtdoelen op (middel)lange afstand uit te schakelen. De aanwezige systemen beschermen onder andere tegen bemande en onbemande vliegtuigen, helikopters en kruisvluchtwapens. Een kruisvluchtwapen is een geleid wapen met een explosieve lading welke na de lancering naar zijn doel vliegt. De F-16’s en helikopters van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht zullen voornamelijk boven de Noordzee oefenen, samen met een aantal andere (civiele) toestellen die de oefening ondersteunen. De landmachteenheden verplaatsen zich al vanaf 14 november door het Noorden van Nederland. Bij deze oefening wordt geen scherpe munitie gebruikt.

Are you sure? Still heading NE at almost 16000 feet near Heerenveen now.

Apparently going straight to Hohn, still at 16.000 ft flying past Heerenveen.

I didn't say that it was not planned to go to Leeuwarden, just that it appeared to continue straight to Hohn instead. Otherwise I would not have been waiting for it to land at a sunny yet very cold Leeuwarden... :wink:

Seems like it was a planned fuel stop which didn't seem necessary after all....
