Wonsan International Air festival, North Korea

Post by stipjes »

Great pics Peter! It where 2 great days :-). In addition to you foto's I tried to find some different angles and light conditions. I hope it worked (though I still have problems with getting some green or blue haze out of the pic).

We arrived in Wonsan on fridayevening in a Il.62. Soon a Tu.154, Il.76, Tu.134, Il.18 and an An.24 followed.

The next morning the show started around 10.00. We where able to walk in between a stretch of about 1000 meter.
A H.500 was the starter.

The morning programm was finished bij a display of four H.500's.
Image
In the afternoon we moved to the otherside of the runway (after a great lunch) and the fighters performed their skills.

Image
In the Sunday programm no fighters where present but there was a lot of acticity with other aircraft (to jump out from)

What a luxury, experimenting on shutter speeds with a North Korean Y.5.

For those who have been there...

for the flying do you need a large lens? like how much zoom?

the flying program was being done against the sun? if so, were the spotters taken to a place with the sun behind?

thanks for the info

I only used a 17-55, 70-200 and a fixed 300mm which was more than enough. We experienced a lot of freedom and in the morning we stood on the eastside and in afternoon on the westside of the runway, always with sun in the back. Although in the morning this was not realy necessary as the display aircraft flew everywhere (also over public) as display rules are non existent in North Korea.

And we were not taken, but we just walked in special timeframes across the runway. A very special experience. The wishes of the photographers were almost 100% granted (sun in back, close taxiways, etc.) so so compared to western airshows, this was a photographers paradise.

Great shots. Thanks for sharing.
On the way out of NK. Did they check your SD/CF cards to look at the pictures?

no camera check at all. Only when entering the usual checks for literature and offensive materials, but all camera equipment were ok to pass.
