AMS - UK market developments 2013

Post by XYZ »

Each year, I post a review of the AMS-UK market developments over the previous year. As the United Kingdom is Schiphol's largest and most important market, it is interesting to see how individual routes perform in comparison to previous years.

Herewith an overview of the AMS-UK passenger market for the year 2013.

2013 has been a good year for Schiphol's most important market, traffic continued to recover from the economic crisis. The demand for air travel has grown and many routes did well, but the record year for AMS-UK traffic remains 2007 which saw over 7.8 million passengers travelling to/from the UK-AMS.

However, some routes continue to be weak, and several routes continue their long and constant decline.

Total Market - AMS-UK-AMS:
- 2013 = 7.668.889 + 3,9%
- 2012 = 7.403.806 + 3,4%
- 2011 = 7.158.000 +10,1%
- 2010 = 6.484.800 -0.9%
- 2009 = 6.544.135 -9,6%
- 2008 = 7.232.400 -7,3%
- 2007 = 7.801.718 + 1%

The following routes set new all-time passenger records:

1. Manston = 35.853 NEW
2. Jersey = 6.813 NEW
3. Cambridge = 4.624 = NEW
4. Southend = 148.981 + 41,6%
5. Newcastle = 356.207 +25,1%
6. Inverness = 32.025 + 21,9%
7. London Gatwick = 750.288 +10,8%
8. Southampton = 103.530 +9,7%
9. London City = 406.656 = +5%
10. Glasgow = 390.061 +4,9%
11. Bristol = 320.956 +3,5%
12. Aberdeen = 291.570 +3,5%
13. Manchester = 687.305 +2,6%

But some routes continue to loose passengers, some have lost pax. for many years:

1. Belfast Harbour = 0 pax. (Route closed following exit of BMIBaby)
2. East Midlands 35.074 = MINUS 35,8% (BMIBaby shut down 2x/daily B737 and FlyBe operates 1x/daily DH4)
3. Liverpool = 207,259 = MINUS 15,9% (KLM closed route and easyJet reduced frequency)
4. Belfast = 104,572 = MINUS 10,2%
5. Stansted = 275,222 = MINUS 6,1% (Competition from Southend - both easyJet airports)
6. Teesside 98.000 = minus 3% - Airport has two remaining scheduled airlines of which KLC is last big operator.
7. EDI, HUY and LBA all witnessed a pax. reduction of less than 1%. EDI due to significant new competition at the airport, HUY and LBA are stable.

- Cambridge, Manston and Jersey will continue to grow fast as they will operate a full 12 months in 2014.
- LPL will continue to fall as easyJet is reducing frequency to 2x/daily.
- Southend will grow as easyjet increases to 3x/daily.
- LCY may grow as BA raises frequency to 7x/day on weekdays, but what will happen to WX CityJet.
