Pelgrimage to Meiringen

Hi everybody,

This week I made the annual pelgrimage to Meiringen, which is becoming kind of a tradition. Although temperatures were well above freezing point, there was still a lot of snow on the ground. Unfortunately flying activities were minimal, with just one or two Hornets per wave. Next to that some Tiger activities were observed (2x red/white, 3x grey), but due to a net barrier defect the F-5’s had to stay on the ground on Tuesday.

I tried to make a nice variation of angles in my photos. Fortunately Meiringen has plenty of spots to choose from. Here is a selection of results. Hope you like them.

1. F/A-18C J-5015 has been flying on every wave during all three days of my visit. Here it comes in for landing at runway 10.

3. Three EC-635’s did auto rotation training at Meiringen’s taxiway because Alpnach was covered with fog

4. F/A-18C J-5015 taking off from runway 10. I tried to capture the speed by using 1/80th shutterspeed with my 300mm.

5. PC-6 V-622, painted in PdS colors, was one of several PC-6’s doing night practise. This shot was taken from hand, at ISO 12.800, 1/30 and f5.0.

6. Two F/A-18C’s taxiing out to runway 10. Most likely these were J-5007 and J-5015.

9. PC-7 A-923 did some training at Meiringen. The traditional orange colorscheme has been replaced by the new red-white color trend.

11. Two similar looking F-5E’s taking off together. From what I was told the J-3089 is a PdS Tiger while J-3080 is an Agressor. The only visible difference is the PdS marking behind the cockpit.

Hi Iwan,
3 days worthwhile spend. Mountains and snow is always a perfect combination. It was a nice surprise meeting again. I like the finals of RW28. Any pics from Ballenberg?

Hoi Iwan, nee het is precies andersom. De J-3089 treedt nooit op met PdS en staat volgens mij op Meiringen. Bijzondere kist! Kostte ons aardig wat moeite om die te pakken te krijgen (op Meiringen inderdaad)

Huh ?! Please explain…. J-3089 has the PdS logo behind the cockpit, while J-3080 does not have it. I was told that the aircraft without the logo are used as agressors. But if you know differently, please let me know. To me all red/white F-5’s are “candy sticks”, which I don’t like. Personally I prefer the grey ones (with or without orange tanks).

Hello Ivan

It is correct, J-3089 used to fly with the Patrouille Suisse initally. A few years after the aircraft were re-painted in the red/white scheme, some received a smoke system and these aircraft were then used by the Patrouille Suisse. J-3089 was not one of these (at least to my knowledge). J-3080 and J-3089 however were modified to fly as target towing aircraft. When the Dammastock range is active during the winter, these two aircraft are based at Meiringen as it is the closest base to the range.

Thanks for explaining. Since you are Swiss, can you suggest a "proper" agressor painting for the F-5's ? My vote is for VMFAT-401 colors.... ;-)
