Hi Paul,

Great set of pictures !

The first time I see pictures from Iwakuni with the new runway being used. It looks like the photo opportunities significantly improved with possibilities to make also runwayshots. Do they use both runways now and with how many mm did you make the runwayshots ? What is the best time of the day to go ? We will go probably end of feb.

Thanks a lot

Ronald

real nice looking pic's ! especially the US1 !
At what point did you take the Shinmeiwa's ? or where you luck with the wind coming from the north ?
looks like these are taken not from the head of the new runway ?!

At Iwakuni the new runway replaces the old one (moving the action further from the city). The only spot at the south end I knew was distant before, it must be completely useless now. They were taking off all day to the north. All these pictures are taken from the new' spot at the NE corner (except two F/A-18A+ on the ground and the E-2, which were taken from just NW of the runway, by the crash gate popular with the locals).

Below is the recently opened NE corner, looking West. The tunnel takes you under the overrun. There are about 8-parking places to the left of the picture. The height of the fence means you don't get much notice with the smaller/faster types popping above:

As the land is part of the base itself, the rules are posted:

Everything taking off North must execute a right turn within 1km to avoid the city. With the likes of the Shins that put them directly overhead at this NE spot (these two are taken at noon):

All the interesting Shin action was during circuits flown obliquely for the water landings heading way. Obviously the landings were a great distance.

Nice ones Paul!

I am so looking forward to return to Japan again by the end of the year. Especially Iwakuni looks great. One thing I just can't figure out, how did you take the shot from above?

The circuits flown for the water landing involved them turning baseleg whilst decending on a roughly south heading - due north of the NE corner spot.
