I'm wondering if it is allowed to take pictures from the airport's regular traffic, from the Airshow Expo Static exp grounds, as UAE security guards are normally very strict on that?

Hi Guys

I was looking at the Dubai Airshow web site and it seems to be a trade-only show? At the risk of sending terribly naive, is it easy to get in regardless or do people watch the displays from somewhere outside? It's not the kind of place you want to be picked up for taking photos of military aircraft really!

Any practical guidance would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Tim,

What are you afraid of? Dubai is a quite civilized country were a lot of news media are present. A person who goes to Dubai does not embark on an unknown trip.

Dubai is indeed an international trade show as Le Bourget, LIMA @ Lankawi, FIDAE @ Saniaigo etc., where one's photographic opportunities are limited but as can be seen on the lists above some interesting participants will be present. This show will be more of a happening for the spotters civil and military then for photographers, however, there can be some pickings during the short air display.

I am sure you will find your guidance when you get there ;-))

Good luck,

CJ.

Hi & thanks for the reply

Appreciate that Dubai is civilised, but they also have big signs everywhere round the airport telling you that photography is prohibited. Clearly if you are inside the trade show photography is ok - or so it says on their web site. Some countries I am happy to go somewhere on the flightpath of a trade show and photograph from there, but I remain unconvinced that it is a good idea in UAE! And I've been told by people who have been there that prisons & jails in UAE are not places you want to go, ever. What I really wanted to know is how strict they are at the gate on genuine trade credentials? I have a business card for my company, but a cursory inspection would reveal that I am unlikely to be acquiring aircraft systems through it. So if you look reasonable and have a business card, can you get in? I've only ever been to a trade show as an invited guest, so just wanted to know how tricky it is if you are not.

Regards

Tim

Dear Tim,

I have been to the trade show before (on the site itself) but I have seen many people on the outside of the airport as well. I would not worry too much.

All the best.

Tim, and others,

I have visited the trade days since 2003 as well as a number of MEBAs. If you have proper attire, i.e. no jeans Tshirt flip flops etc. and a business card, then you should have no problem to get in on a trade day. Being out on the apron, typically in the shade of a large aircraft :-), you wil be much closer to the action than outside.

As to civil traffic, taking pictures of that has never been a problem when on the air show apron. Prevailing winds are from the south west, so they will be landing 30L and taking off from 30R, so you will have some great photo opportunities for landing.

Been to Dubai about 10 times now and never heard of anyone in real trouble when taking pictures of landing aircraft. The worst that in theory could happen is a 4 hour visit to a nearby police station. My guess is that during the air show police would be more bothered about parking your rental car in the wrong place. If you still want to give it a try, go to the Mirdif new residential area south east of the airport and stay in the car (will get hot though) as much as possible.

happy hunting !

Although unable to come landside and visit this event,I taxied close-ish to the show earlier on the 15th on EK211 around 09.45 and the following mil airplanes were clearly identified,

2x F-15E on the flight line?
1x UAE F-16 on the flight line with another in static
1x C-27J (MM62127)?
1x grey S-70/SH-60 in static
2x C-17A
1x UAE Mirage 2000 in static
1x MV-22B
1x F/A-18 in static

Further mil airacrft were present, but distance precluded further identifaction of types.

Hopefully another chance to view this on return on EK212 late on the 17th.

Anyone care to fill in any serials for the above?.
