Re: Bulgarian International Aviation Festival BIAF -2011
Just returned with the 4Aviation group from the nice trip to the BIAF 2011 held at Plovdiv - Krumovo in Bulgaria. Temperatures were 30+ and nice weather. It was a small airshow but with nice high quality aircraft.
1. MiG-21Bis and MiG-29UB from Graf-Ignatievo arriving in style
2. Locally based Mil Mi-17 with a bambi-bucket demo. On the Friday it was for real to put out a forest fire close to the airfield
3. MiG-29OVT showing topside
4. MiG-21Bis during take-off at the end of the show on Sunday
5. As did the Su-25K from Bezmer
6. MiG-29A being towed from the static area

Wow, you guys were fast. Here is some more, from a very satisfying trip. It was great 'hunting' in the company of both long-time and newly acquainted fellow spotters.
Arrivals
PC-9 under tow
Wanted this!
Rehearsal
Solo by two?
Static area
Inactive but able
Just two of the many
Tactical demo
Hoisting with overhead patrol
Blue bellies and rotor sync
@ Graf I.: mission accomplished
A feast for the eye
And for the ears...
Departures
Golden light by 6pm
Erik
edit: subtitles for easier reference

Re: Bulgarian International Aviation Festival BIAF -2011
Thanks a lot for the two MiG-21 photos. From the details in the color scheme I could identify these were the two on QRA some weeks ago when I visited Graf!Key wrote: @ Graf I.: mission accomplished!

Re: Bulgarian International Aviation Festival BIAF -2011
Whoopee !!! This shot alone would be worth the entire trip for me.Key wrote:Wanted this!
The shot with the two Cougars and the C-27J are lovely too, but the MiG-21's must have taken the cake for almost everybody.
Well done,
Iwan

Re: Bulgarian International Aviation Festival BIAF -2011
Thank you all, blagodarya!
For me personally, the MiGs indeed were enough to make the trip pay off completely (if only because of too many missed opportunities in the past). However, there was so much highly interesting other hardware too, that I'd rather not single out one type. In terms of colours and markings, the Bulgarian air force is ranking high. The biggest photographic challenge was the heat haze.
About the MiG-21, Anton told us five remain flying today: four singles and one dual. Without the latter, the others would be grounded in no-time.

Re: Bulgarian International Aviation Festival BIAF -2011
Make that (at least) six airworthy examples! Three weeks ago we saw 114, 243 and 36 flying (the latter is the only double seater). Two aircraft were on QRA, which later turned out to be 358 and 392 (flying at the airshow). That makes five Apart from those five, 340 was a spare aircraft during our stay. First it was parked on the flightline, later it became the QRA spare. Also, 427 (in maintenance) and 294 were seen in pretty good condition, but of course I can't say if these are or will become airworthy. We were told the MiG-21 will be retired between December 2010 and April 2011, a final date has not been set..Key wrote: About the MiG-21, Anton told us five remain flying today: four singles and one dual.
