Incident: Air Burkina MD80 at Paris on Jan 12th 2011, landed below final reserve

By Simon Hradecky, created Friday, Jan 21st 2011 20:55Z, last updated Friday, Jan 21st 2011 21:02Z

The crew of an Air Burkina McDonnell Douglas MD-80, ferry flight 2J-5010 from Paris Orly (France) to an unknown destination, was attempting to ferry the aircraft with the landing gear down.

After the crew determined they did not have sufficient fuel to continue to destination they decided to return to Paris Orly.

While attempting to land in Orly in weather conditions below minima air traffic control commanded the aircraft went around twice before landing safely on the third attempt with less fuel than the required final reserve remaining.

The NTSB reported that an Air Burkina MD-83 landed in Paris Orly with fuel nearly exhausted in their third attempt on Jan 12th 2011 after air traffic control commanded the aircraft to go around twice "due to poor geographic positioning of the airplane for landing".

The NTSB have nominated an accredited representative to participate in the investigation of the incident by the French government.

Air Burkina owns one MD-83 (XT-ABF) and two MD-87s (XT-ABC and XT-ABD).

The MD-83 XT-ABF appeared to be operating normally (seen several times as flight 2J-562 between Dakar, Bamako and Ouagadougou) between Jan 6th and 15th, while XT-ABD registered ferry flights 2J-5010 on Jan 9th and Jan 15th.

On Jan 6th a replacement Nouvelair Airbus A320-200 TS-INA was ferried to Paris Orly as flight 2J-5010 and
subsequently performed flight 2J-501 from Paris Orly to Marseille (France) and further on to Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso).

TS-INA also served the rotation 2J-500/2J-501 between Burkina Faso and Paris on Jan 9th.

The next rotation 2J-500/501 was scheduled with arrival and departure in Paris on Jan 16th, the status of the rotation is unclear.

No rotation was scheduled to arrive/depart on Jan 13th, a single flight 2J-501 directly to Ouagadougou without an inbound flight and without the intermediate stop in Marseille was scheduled for Jan 12th however.

The Aviation Herald was unable to determine which aircraft actually performed flight 2J-500 to Paris Orly on Jan 6th.
