Incident: Sonair F50 at Cabinda on Dec 13th 2010, runway excursion
By Simon Hradecky, created Wednesday, Dec 15th 2010 23:42Z, last updated Wednesday, Dec 15th 2010 23:42Z
A Sonair Fokker 50, registration D2-ESW performing a domestic scheduled flight from Luanda to Cabinda (Angola),
veered right off runway 01 while landing in Cabinda in heavy rainfalls around 07:30L (06:30Z).
The airplane came to a stop with all gear off the paved surface in wet mud. No injuries occured.
The airport was closed for 2 days following the runway excursion until the aircraft could be removed from the runway shoulder, where the gear had sunk into the mud.
On Monday (Dec 13th) Cabinda had received torrential rains causing flooding in the city.
No Metars are available for the airport itsself (Metars are available for Pointe Noire 50nm north of Cabinda), the local weather station reported light thunderstorms and rain during the night until their 07:00L brief,
where they reported thunderstorms and heavy rain, at 08:00L they reported light thunderstorm and rain again.
An image shows the city flooded and the ground soaked with water.
The airline recently changed their schedule now flying
Luanda-Cabinda-Luanda (Mo, We, Sa) and Luanda-Soyo-Luanda (Mo-Sa) directly,
until September 2010 there had been a roundtrip Luanda-Soyo-Cabinda-Luanda (Mo,We,Sa).
