VIDEO: Stearman biplane flips, shuts down DCA
By Jon Ostrower
Departures from Washington National airport's longest runway were halted today after a Stearman biplane flipped on arrival.
The accident happened around 1015 (1815 GMT) at the southern end of the airport's north-facing 6,900ft runway 1.
While the airport is closed to unscheduled operations and special charters, the accident happened as a flight of eight Stearman biplanes was on arrival to as part of a press event promoting Legends of Flight 3D IMAX film which opens this week.
Both the pilot and passenger walked away from the accident and the remaining seven aircraft landed safely. Commercial departures resumed after a brief ground stop and runway 33, which is 5,200ft, was allocated for departures and arrivals.
