ATR to Develop New Large Turboprop Aircraft?

Post by flying_kiwi »

Apparently ATR are in discussions with both GE and P&W Canada regarding engines for a new large turboprop aircraft.

- Aircraft will likely be 90+ seat in size.
- GE are looking at development of the GE38 turboshaft fitted to the CH-53K helicopter.
- P&W haven't mentioned any specifics, but the deisgn will make use of technology developed for the geared turbofan.
- Decision by ATR as to whether development of the aircraft will go ahead will be made next year, aiming for approx. EIS of 2016.

Source.

Should be interesting if ATR goes ahead with this, as this would be the first turboprop of its size since the early days of the engine design (ie. Electra).
