"Sorry but the board is temporarily unavailable" message

All,

Have been changing several settings on this message board, hoping this would reduce the amount of errors causing this Message Board going off-line, like disabling the overview of current visitors and the birthday listing etc.
From my perspective (but I'm not monitoring 24/7 off course), this did help a little, but still the database errors are too common.

We also contacted (again) the hosting provider to investigate what exactly causes those errors, but I am not expecting too much from this (apart from the suggestion to disable the message board completely ).

Next step will be that - as a test!! - I will use some settings that the board will disable itself temporarily for a short period, just before the actual error kicks in. You will then get the message "Sorry but the board is temporarily unavailable, please try again in a few minutes."

Unfortunately documentation on this feature is scarce (which is why I was reluctant to use it). But my expectation is that the number of shut-downs will increase slightly, but that the time-frame the message board can not be reached will decrease significantly.

I will enable this feature later tonight, with the test period lasting until next Sunday.

Please let me know your experiences over the next few days, the bad, but also the good!!, below.

As no feedback was received whatsoever, I presume that at least it did not have a negative impact on the performance. Therefore I will leave this setting in place for the time being, at least until we move the message board to the new server.

nope; that had something to do with missing avatars, which presumably went searching in the big outside digital world to find a mate and make little avatars.

Hi,

Although I appreciate everybody's effort to tell me about all (error) messages they get , what I'm particularly interested in, is whether you experience an improvement of the reachability of the message board in general, or just the opposite.
I know nobody will be able to give me exact figures (unless you are online 24/7), but general impressions will do just fine!
(and for the tech-savvy ; no, this can not be distributed from the log files I have access to.)

ik heb het gevoel, dat ik nu vaker "Sorry but the board is temporarily unavailable" krijg, dan voorheen "Too many users".
Dat "too many users" trad (wat mij betreft) meestal rond het middagsuur op, maar nu komt de melding ieder moment van de dag.

Hopelijk heb je hier wat aan.

Dat was juist het probleem; de afgelopen weken was ook het aantal "Too many connections" meldingen drastisch toegenomen, en bleef dat niet alleen beperkt tot (exact) 12:00, 18:00 en 24:00 (en ik vermoed dus ook 06:00, maar dan lig ik meestal nog op één oor, dus nooit gechecked ).

Ha Hans,

ik had de boodschap pak m beet 5 minuten geleden, en eerder vandaag ook 2 keer. Niet op hele uren overigens.

Maar: als ik in Safari op de RSS knop druk, dan krijg ik de normale lijst van posts die vandaag gedaan zijn en die kan ik door 1 keer te klikken op de post, ook gewoon openen en dus lezen! Op die manier werkt het MB gewoon, terwijl ik dus een seconde ervoor de error boodschap in beeld had.
