Bolivia to ban aircraft older than 25 years

In what I see as a government attempt to kill all competition of government owned BoA, Bolivia is planning to ban aircraft older than 25 years at the end of 2011.

That would mean all Lloyd Aereo Boliviano aircraft and all but one of Aerosurs aircraft.

Guess the ban is only for commercial aircraft (haven't been able to find out), but interesting to see if this will also kill the last oldprop operations in the country as well.

A sad day for Bolivian aviation in my eyes!

I do wonder if they have the money to cover this impact (if not the entire market will collaps or a low-cost brand might appear on the scene ?) as this is a radical move ...

Do not worry. BoA will be ready to expand and take over the market ensuring government monopoly. A well planed move I am affraid :cry:

Damn! That's bad indeed. And I share your view Michael, 25 years is arbitrary and not related to for instance any sensible safety argument.

Michael, are you sure your source means aircraft older than 25 years old cannot be on the register anymore (like you state) OR that aircraft older than 25 years cannot be imported (i.e. put on the CP-register) any more? My gut feeling says the latter is more likely, but I stand corrected.

The latter regulation has unfortunately become rather common in countries where oversight by the local airworthiness authorities - in simple terms - is rather poor. Examples include:
Taiwan, 10 years age limit
India, 15 years
Thailand, 15 years (new rule since January 1st this year)
Indonesia, 20 years
Nigeria, 20 years

If anyone has more confirmed countries, I wouldn't mind hearing (maybe subject for a different topic, moderator?).
