Swedish Viggens at Luleå, back in summer of 2005!!!
Hello hello!!
I found the photos again of that summer holiday in 2005... and boy what a great time that was!
We where on holidays in Sweden again and this time all the way up in Lappland. We stayed several days in Luleå, mostly to check out the flying activities at the airfield. Flottilj 21 is based there and was in that year still operating the famous Saab Viggen! Gripens were also already taken in, but only with one division. It was to be their last year, so we tried to catch some of the last flights of these rare machines! The types that were left where the dual-seaters (SK37E), recce (AJSF37) and maritme recce (AJSH37). The normal type was already out of service by then.
To our own happiness they did fly!!! Damn, it was exciting and mighty to see them... what a great planes!
Here we go with some pics I recently (re-)edited:
#1 Start of with a bang!
#2 If possible dual take offs were preferred
#3 They look nice in landing too
#4 Overhead for downwind
#5 Hold it, Viggen on finals!
#6 The younger brother...
#7 Two AJSH camos in the line up!!
#8
#9 And two AJSF recces lining up!
#10 Special paint recce, with meaning 'Lonely Wolf' as is the squadron's motto
#11
#12 and off they go! What a sound, that echos through the woods!
#13 During the landings to our surprise one more Viggen came down, which we didnt see in take off
#14
#15 A stunning flightline remained!!
#16 Next day it was as wet as possible unlike the forecast told us..
#17
#18 But looking verrrry nice
#19 and boy... burn baby burn!!
#20 What an awesome memories!!
Questions, comments, etc. welcome...

I'd rather depict atmosphere and the 'heat of the moment' making a catchy photo than to reflect the real situation and real colours showing a boring photo.

Oh, I do miss these mighty machines. I can remember so well all those days at Swedish air shows and at the fence spotting Viggens....
Especially at Soderhamn, where you could read the serials without binoculars (no kidding!!). Although you did get deaf in the process

Very nice report!
As you can clearly see this aircraft certainly doesn't belong in the so-called ugly aircraft topic!

Hi Corne,
I visited Lulea in 2005 as well. Lucky me, as I considered the Viggen to be one of the most beautiful aircraft flying about in Europe at the time. Here is an impression of my visit.
Cheers,
Iwan

I was there on 6+7 April 2005. We did see the Norhern Light over the Viggens at night, but the camera was in the wrong place to caprure it. Unfortunately it only appeared once that night.....
Thanks for your kind words,
Iwan
