Re: Avient MD11F crashes at Shanghai
Report from Avherald can be found here.
The aircraft reportedly failed to become airborne after rotation as normal, with the main gear leaving the ground just before the end of the runway. The aircraft got no further than about 3 metres above the ground before impacting the approach lighting.
That description suggests number of possible factors such as: cargo shift, incorrect cargo loading, miscalculated takeoff performance.
It might take a while for the Chinese to issue a report in English, but I'm very interested in seeing the contributing factors in this accident.

Horrible news. RIP... it are bad times for the MD11's. A lot of accidents and incidents are reported lately.

One more; crew capabilities?flying_kiwi wrote:That description suggests number of possible factors such as: cargo shift, incorrect cargo loading, miscalculated takeoff performance.

I don't know much about Avient, but this airline raises questions with me. Since they were used to the DC-10's, this MD-11 was a completely new type for them, and compared to the DC-10, a lot more difficult to fly for crew. This type has a bitchy character, so how well trained was the crew?

Crossed my mind too, however I expect that the company had contracted experienced MD-11 pilots to operate the aircraft while their own crews were getting up to speed.skycruiser wrote:One more; crew capabilities?

It would be easier to hire MD-11 pilots and arrange a Zimbabwean validation of their FAA/JAA etc. license than to wait until their own crews are fully trained.
But you're quite correct in that nothing should be ruled out until there is evidence of the contrary.

3 Americans die in China plane crash
Aircraft veered off the runway, burst into flames at Shanghai airport
SHANGHAI - Three Americans were killed when a cargo plane crashed during takeoff at Shanghai's main international airport, U.S. Embassy officials said Saturday.
Embassy spokesman Richard Buangan confirmed that a fourth American was injured. He did not know the injured person's condition.
The plane was on its way to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, when it veered off the runway and burst into flames Saturday morning.
The aircraft's tail struck the ground on takeoff, China Central Television reported. Footage showed black smoke billowing from the wreckage.
Seven crew members were on board. China's official Xinhua news agency reported that one crew member was critically injured, with three in serious condition.
The aircraft was operated by Zimbabwe-based Avient Aviation, Xinhua said.
Citing health officials, the news agency said crew members came from the United States, Indonesia and other unnamed countries.
More than 30 international flights were delayed Saturday morning, leaving about 4,000 travelers stranded on planes or in airport lounges, Xinhua said.
Shanghai is China's largest city and its economic capital. The Pudong airport is located on the eastern edge of the city, by the East China Sea.

Re: Avient MD11F crashes at Shanghai
This is exactly the reason why this kind of speculation is so bad.... As rockville already posted, the crew was American. Do you still think it was due to lack of experience on the type?flying_kiwi wrote:Crossed my mind too, however I expect that the company had contracted experienced MD-11 pilots to operate the aircraft while their own crews were getting up to speed.skycruiser wrote:One more; crew capabilities?

We all do not know what happened, so lets wait until somebody with actual knowledge of the situation publishes a report.

Re: Avient MD11F crashes at Shanghai
Speculation is normal, and neither Eric nor myself have indicated that we have any evidence outside of what has been reported in the media. As long as people don't confuse opinion with fact, I don't see any problem.ehusmann wrote:This is exactly the reason why this kind of speculation is so bad.... No-one mentioned that the crew had a lack of experience on type. Eric raised the perfectly valid question of what experience the crew had, and I replied that I expected that the company would have hired experienced crews for initial operations.
I also pointed out that no possibility can be ruled out without evidence to the contrary. Are you suggesting (speculating ), that just because the crew were identified as American, that they were automatically experienced??
