Re: JAT 737 off runway Istanbul
Thats the fourth overrun in Istanbul in the last 12 months!!
The other three were:
- Dniproavia E145 23/03/09
- Turkish Airlines B738 20/10/08
- TAROM B737 15/10/08
Another notable overrun in Istanbul in the past few years was the Ariana A300. All of these incidents/accidents have occured on runway 06/24, which would suggest to me that there is an issue with the runway itself, whether it be the surface, slope, approach or something else.
Hopefully the airport authorities in Istanbul are already looking into the reasons behind these overruns, and are working on a solution to improve safety before it happens again, with a less fortunate ending.
Regards,
Yorden

In one of the articles was mentioned, that Istanbul Airport starts extending the runway, at the end of this year.

IIRC the incident with the Ariana had something to do with a huge amount of rubber on the (I think) concrete runway surface.

Re: JAT 737 off runway Istanbul
Another reason could be that point of touchdown is too far on the runway.
