Good luck !! Surinam Airways
Still got 4 engines (actually called hairdriers..), less passengers to take and very low performance..I guess ATC (Key  ) is very happy with this A340..it takes ages these aircraft reach FL250..
Oh well, it is a new number in the book..

.

From a source within SLM:

A340 will replace the B743.

A340 due 1st week November 2009.
B743 Phase-out 2nd week November 2009.

The B743 is apparently for sale.

Don't know if it's allready mentioned, other wise I'm sorry.
With the arrival of the 340 a 4th day will be introduced.
If this is going ok, a big change of a 5th day is possible.

So what's the latest news on the Surinam Airways A340-300? Is it still in France in the paintshop? When will it be flying to Paramaribo?

Best regards,

I assume the aircraft will be painted within the next weeks.
Delivery currently scheduled for 2nd/3rd week november, including one week training in France.

Current planning is 'delivery'-flight from France to Holland and with pax to Surinam.
Assume this will be on November 24th as per SLM timetable.

No info on earlier flights to Surinam.

AFAIK SLM is not planning to simultaniusly operate the B747 and A340.

It looks really cool.. can't wait to see it. However, I will really miss the old 747 if I have seen the A340 for a couple of times..

It reminds me of yesterday. First time I saw Delta A330 I was happy but yesterday I saw only DL, no NW aircrafts unfortunately :(
But that's off topic.

Some more rumours on the second A340 and some thoughts on Surinam Airways:

1) second A340 offered is some 3 years younger than the first A340
2) Will be acquired as it comes available from AF in june 2010: anyone knows which AF A340 this could be?
3) The first A340 will be flown by (ex) scandinavian (SAS?) pilots as trainer/pilots for their own crews. One pilot is a dutch national, the others scandinavians. They already visited Surinam.

Surinam airways is looking for new long-haul routes, Maybe PBM-GEO-JFK? Or PBM Bruxelles or Antwerp?
Two long haul aircraft will greatly facilitate the whole longhaul operation when a plane goes tech.

Considering the world wide economic downturn, it is remarkable to see them faring so good. Maybe because Surinam is currently quite booming?

Because of the economic crisis they were able to get the two airbuses for a very good lease price...
I see Surinam Airways competing very well with its big ex-partner KLM. They offer better onboard service and far better fare conditions (comparable with large US carriers) and you don't have to pay an extra fee for "good" chairs. (I think KL is the only carrier where you have to pay for a "good" chair).
A pity their planes are always filled to the brim...

Just the opposite, SLM will soon be one of the few carriers where you don't have to pay for extra legroom etc.

I highly doubt if it will work, Citybird has also tried it before without being succesful...

I see a PBM-CUR-AMS routing and back as a more attractive route but that's just my opinion.
