If you go: Don't hang around at the fence. If you do, you probably will be send away. At least, that's what happened today.
If you have enough mm's you could position yourself on the large hill next to the runway. There they won't bother you.

which exact hornets are at wittmund? is it correct that there are the following ones: J-5003, 5004, 5005, 5009, 5014, 5017, 5026, 5232, 5236 and 5238?

13th A4's:
Flying, N432FS, N437FS in three waves.
On platform N434FS and N262WL.
at 17:30 (!) i think the N434FS departed, i waited till 18:45 but i didnt see it come back. Althoug the firebrigade was still at the runway at that time.

13th August Phantoms
Also flying in three waves (also QRA).
Phantoms are parked on the west end platform of the base, Hornets are parked at the east end platform.
Flying:
37+01, 37+03, 37+17, 37+81, 37+84, 38+24, 38+46, 38+70, 38+73 (replaced 37+84 during second wave)
QRA: 38+43, 38+62
The QRA was deployed last at 17:45 and returned 18:30...
On tow to QRA prepare hangar, 38+42.
Other tow 38+69
Also flying in three waves (also QRA).

I visited Wittmund on the 18th of August 2009. I arrived around 08.10 hours and already planes had left. The swiss Hornets flew four waves (08.00 - 09.00 with six planes; 10.10 - 11.00 with six planes; 12.15 - 13.15 with seven planes and 15.15 - 16.00 with six planes). The Phantoms of JG-71 flew three waves. From 08.00 - 10.15 with ten Phantoms; from 12.15 - 13.35 with seven Phantoms and from 15.30 - 17.15 with nine Phantoms. The speciall painted Phantom 37+03 flew in all waves so three times . One A-4 Skyhawks of BAe FlightSystems N262WL flew from 08.00 - 09.30; The other two flew two sorties from 10.00 - 11.40 and 14.00 - 15.35.
... so most of the day activity . Weather was OK: dry, a mix of sunshine and clouds, nice temperatures, mildly western wind.
All numbers read from pics.

The swiss Hornets don't belong to a specific unit but fly from a pool.
That is why only 3 aircraft carry a squadron marking: J-5011 (11Staffel), J-5017 (17Staffel), J-5018 (18 Staffel).

Hi all,
being a civil spotter, I decided to go to Wittmundhafen on friday 21-08-2009. Why? Phantoms! That's why!
Arriving on the scene around 7:40LT with my dad (from whom I "inherited" my love for anything Phantom) we were well in time to install ourselves on the embankment at the beginning of runway 26.
At around 8:00LT 37+03 (Richthofen c/s), 37+81, 37+93 and 38+46 went out together.
With everybody in the neighbourhood now awake it was not long before 37+92 went out alone. The crew was however overtaken both on the left and the right by scrambling 37+84 and 38+37.
While the last Phantom to come back, 37+92, entertained us with practising approaches, the Swiss got ready to take to the air. J-5005, J-5010, J-5014, J-5026 (flying saucer marking), J-5232 and J-5238 departed at 9:45LT.
With no Phantoms in the air and the Swiss just away, we thought it was a good time to make a quick dash back to the car to get something to eat and drink...which caused us to miss an overshooting Tornado... 43+...and then it was gone... Several minutes later another (or the same) Tornado overshot the runway, 43+42.
The Hornets started to return at 10:45LT. 5 minutes later 37+84 and 38+37 came out of the QRA shelters again. 38+37 was now the first one in the sky, 37+84 remained on the ground for another 15 minutes. With the base turning quiet again, we were entertained by two Tornado's flying high from south to north. We saw them making some twists and turns before diving towards something north of Wittmundhafen.
At 11:35LT the QRA Spooks returned. A-4 N262WL started the last wave of the day at 11:50LT. It was followed by 37+93 and 38+46. J-5004, J-5005, J-5014, J-5026, J-5232 and J-5238 then departed. Cessna D-EOSO crossed over the base (which was great for a civil spotter like me off course, lol). 37+03 and 37+92 then took off, at which time the first planes started to come back. The last Phantom touched down at 13:35LT with the Hornets already covered with engine and horizontal stabilizer covers. After a phantastic morning it was time to move to Bremen for us.

A small addition, around 16.00 another wave started, this time a seventh F-18C was seen, serial J-5010 (SwAF). A number of F-4F's, ready for departure, returned to the hangars when a thunderstorm came through around 1645 lt.KeesvA wrote:Today at Wittmund:
