(notes: for the first time since 15 years, I missed the chance to witness the arrival days of the ‘Luchtmacht Dagen’ - due to serious illness. However, after one week in the hospital, I used the first opportunity for the short journey to Volkel – all alone, as a joined tour with a friend could not be realised. In order to reduce stress and support the healing process, I used the chance to park on private ground near the runway 24 approach for just 3 Euro and to observe flying operations from outside the base perimters.
My highlight of the flying display was the airpower demonstration of the Netherlands Air Force, featuring 15 based F-16s and five very welcome supporting helicopters. Also of major interest was a four-ship of Strikemasters, while a joined display of the Vulcan, a historic Hunter and a Dutch F-16 was a very nice surprise. The day ended with a a lot of departures after the end of the flying display, including no less than eight Dutch military helicopters and the amazing Polish MiG-29 ...)

(notes: for the first time since 5 years, I used the chance to witness the regular Sunday departures of the ‘Luchtmacht Dagen – this time together with my family. Some patience was required until flying operations began at midday, but this was rewared by the sight of 25 aircraft leaving within just two and a half hours. Highlights among these where the pairs of Spanish F-18s and French Alpha Jets, while the departure of the Vulcan was a class of its own. Leaving Volkel immediately after the lights where turned off, this nice day was completed by a very nice sightseeing tour in the Northern partn of the German Lower Rhine area ...)

(notes: in order the experience all participating aircraft of the ‘Luchtmacht Dagen 2009’, a third trip to Volkel was necessary. Luckily, all aircraft I was hoping for departed during that morning without any ground-aborts. Highlights amongst there where the pairs of British Tornados, Austrian Saab 105s, American A-10s and Dutch Hunters. Departures of all nine “Turkish Stars”, a lot of interesting single-ships and a overflight of two Royal Army Lynx’ were welcome additions. Leaving Volkel again immediately after the lights where turned off, this nice day was completed by some very interesting farming activity in the area of Odiliapeel ...)
