Rafale out from the HAF short list for 60 fighters
Athens 22/1/09
From a today's interview of Defense Minister Mr Meimarakis
During 2009, it is going to be decided the purchase of new fighters (40 according to the Air Force General Stuff study). Taking into account that the French proposal for the Rafale has not succeesfull, the short list now includes, the Eurofighter Typhoon and 2 American, the F-16 (Block 52+ ADV with AESA radar or F-16 E/F Block 60) and the F/A-18EF Super Hornet. Many things will be depended upon the possible and forthcoming visit of the PM Kosta Karamanli and/or the defense minister to the US.On the contrary the the French proposal, for an exchange of the Mirage 2000 with new Rafale F.3 was rejected, as this proposal concerned only the new Mirage 2000-5Mk2 and not the older Mirage 2000EGM/BGM.According to analysts this development gives an end to the possibility of a purchase of the French fighter from HAF, especially in combination of the possible procurement of French frigates and SAR helicopters.

Will the French ever suceed in securing an export order for their Rafale?.
One of the versions of the F-16 has to be the prime candidate for this order.

Isn't Greece already receiving some 30 new build F-16C/D-52's this year? (20x F-16C-52 and 10x F-16D-52)

I thought Libya ordered between 13-18 Rafale jetsLe Addeur noir wrote:Will the French ever suceed in securing an export order for their Rafale?.

Nope, there have been no export orders for Rafales yet. Last thing I read about Lybia is that they were likely to buy MiGs.n.p.quist wrote:I thought Libya ordered between 13-18 Rafale jets

It was from the begining known that the country that will get the program for 6 new frigates will lose the contract for 40-60 new fighters. So the selection of 6 FREMM and 17 Cougar leave out the Rafale from the HAF options.
