Old Sea Lynx Mk.88 hulls discovered, still there?

Hi there,

As you all probably know, the German Navy had it's Sea Lynx Mk.88 helicopters rebuilt and upgraded during the late nineties to the current Super Lynx Mk.88A version. This meant that a completely new airframe was used to rebuilt the helicopters. This resulted in disposing their former hulls (basically an emptied airframe) as these were no longer required and I read somewhere that all these were subsequently disposed off and/or put in storage with Westland (the contractor for the rebuild).

Not so long ago I visited Kassel-Calden airport and there I noted a former hull being preserved with the local Eurocopter factory and was ID'ed as 83+13. This has also been taken up in the Scramble database. Even more recently I had a visit at Nordholz and discovered an older Lynx being used as a ground instruction aircraft. Identification failed since it caried a fake serial (83+54) and c/n's did not help either. A total of three were found (540, 551 and 582) as well as a written serial (83+07) in the cockpit. Only just now I found an interesting place http://maps.google.de/maps?t=k&q=53.216 ... 00861&z=20" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which shows a total of nine hulls in the village of Rekum at some kind of defence storage facility. Since I don't know how old this image is does anyone know if these are still there? This could mean that most hulls have survived and are still in Germany since a total of 15 have been rebuilt.

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this! Also, if someone could help me ID the Lynx at Nordholz this would be much appreciated!

Sjoerd, only thing I can add is GE shows 21may02 as photo date, and at the location is U-Boot Bunker 'Valentin'.

Interesting find!

I'm afraid I can not help you with the ID of the Lynx at Nordholz. I can only add that the 'real' 83+07 was at Donauwörth at that time.

When visiting Putlos in December 2007 there was only one Lynx frame.
Acc to the tour guide this was pushed over de cliff at the sea side
once a year for a rescue exercise.
Every time the damage gets bigger.

The 83+07 is the test machine in Donauwörth. The Lynx will maybe comeback to Nordholz the end of 2009. The other one are written off and are old wards and are demilitarizationed and stored at Bunker Valtentin near Bremen, Schwanewede and Putlos. The 83+54 is only a ground instruction aircraft which is never flown before as 83+01 oder some other reg.
