Didn't know the lower "sit" of the -30 though. What is the reason for that feature?

Not really a feature, just a result of the stretched part behind the main wheels. With the same pitch attitude the longer distance to the lowest point (the hinge of the ramp) will result in less ground clearance. A matter a geometry/mathematics.

Short versions are capable of LAPES (= Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System) delivery of cargo. Something the stretched -30's is not capable of doing, due to the (bigger) shift of the center of gravity during the extraction.

I understand the RNLAF opted for the normal short version. But I wonder why our first two Herc are of the stretched variant. Did the early nineties peacekeeping operations need more voluminous cargo transport, while current operations require more tactical approaches and higher density equipment?

The RNLAF bought the two stretched Hercs because these were already produced at the time of procurement. So they did not really have a choice, because they wanted to have the aircraft on a short term.

Met succes is een testvlucht gemaakt met de eerste van 2 C-130 Hercules transportvliegtuigen die voor de Koninklijke Luchtmacht worden opgewaardeerd. De Hercules wordt op korte termijn aan de luchtmacht overgedragen.

Defensie heeft de 2 toestellen aangeschaft vanwege deelname aan de intensieve vredesmissies. Met de 2 nieuwe toestellen komt het totaal aantal Nederlandse C-130’s op 4. De testvlucht van de tweede C-130 vindt later dit jaar plaats. De vluchten vinden plaats vanaf het terrein van Marshall Aerospace, dat de aanpassingen aan beide toestellen uitvoert voor vliegtuigbouwer Lockheed.

Digitaal
De cockpit van het vliegtuig is ingrijpend gemoderniseerd. Zo zijn alle analoge beeldschermen vervangen door digitale exemplaren, voorzien van de laatste technologie. De aanpassingen komen zowel de werkdruk van de piloten, de ‘situational awareness’ als de veiligheid ten goede. Directeur Martin Broadhurst van Marshall Aerospace: “Dit is een van de meest omvattende en complexe opdrachten die wij ooit hebben uitgevoerd.”

Dankzij de aanpassingen voldoen de vliegtuigen aan de huidige eisen op het gebied van maritieme en elektronische oorlogsvoering. De modernisering was hard nodig aangezien de vorige eigenaar, de Amerikaanse luchtmacht, in 1991 voor het laatst met de toestellen heeft gevlogen. Na begin 2006 ontmanteld te zijn, werden de vliegtuigen over land en zee naar de fabriek in Cambridge getransporteerd.

De komende weken doen Nederlandse piloten tijdens verschillende testvluchten ervaring op met de transporttoestellen.

Hoezo Maritieme oorlogsvoering??? daar hadden we toch prima uitgeruste Orions voor.
Wat is de luchtmacht van plan met Maritieme oorlogsvoering....? De Hercules lijkt mij voor andere doelen aangeschaft. Of heb ik het nou mis?

Ik vermoed dat men inderdaad een beetje teveel rosé heeft zitten drinken op het terras voordat het persbericht er uit ging...

Voor zover als ik weet gaat de KLu niets martitiems doen met hun C-130's (anders dan dat veel P-3 crewleden een plekje hebben gevonden op EHV).

De link naar de het defensiebericht is al weer vertrokken want het vliegtuig heeft vorige week inderdaad niet gevlogen. Het ligt wel in de bedoeling er deze week mee te gaan vliegen.

Trouwens de tekst: "De komende weken doen Nederlandse piloten tijdens verschillende testvluchten ervaring op met de transporttoestellen." was ook niet helemaal korrekt. Initieel worden de vliegtuigen door Marshall testvliegers getest waarna een KLu crew een 3 maanden durende OT&E (vanaf Eindhoven) op zich neemt.
