Not as Arty-Farty as the Tornado, but I think this is also Arty-Farty

As they say in Holland: "De beste stuurlui staan aan wal" (freely translated: it's easy to comment if you don't have to do it yourself)

Therefor I have browsed some of my old slide scans and compiled a trilogy of carrier-arty-farty-shots. Hope you like them....

Cheers,
Iwan

Below is my own little atempt. I'm not even sure i'd call it arty farty. In fact, I think most pics in this thread don't qualify. The pic of the Tornado flying along the mountains - brought by Iwan as an example - is nowhere near arty farty in my mind. It's just a pic of a Tornado in a nice landscape with some nice clouds. Nice pic, but nothing special. The pic certainly doesn't make me say 'How in the hell did he get that shot?' or 'Why can't I think of that?'. In that sense NustyR's shots do qualify as arty farty... along with only a few others.

Ah, now we're getting somewhere in this discussion ! Great !!

You are absolutely right that a photo has an Arty-Farty component when it makes you say 'How in the hell did he get that shot?' or 'Why can't I think of that?' My own definition of Arty-Farty is that if I put the photo on the wall, it will make me dream off. It must be inspiring and make you say ohhhh and ahhhh because of it's composition, colours and lighting.

The fact that Rembrand's "Nachtwacht", Jan Wolkers' "Broken Glass" and Barnett Newman's "Who's afraid of red, yellow and blue?" are all considered to be art explains that there is no true definition or one single stream of art. Nevertheless most of us can distinguish arty from regular, average and even failed photos. You don't always have to like what you see, but you know when something is special.

More opinions are very welcome....

Cheers,
Iwan

I do agree with both of you, wich makes it difficult to make a firm point however i will try.

Let me start by saying that both my equipment as my personal skills will not allow me to post some arty farty pics in this topic. That is why i like to express my definition of arty farty. In my opinion arty farty is a combination of wondering how someone made the shot ie was able to find that special composition and lighting. And on the other hand has a special/original way to picture aviation.
A few examples: the shot by machlooper wich triggered this fabulous topic is in my opinion arty farty because it gives a perfect idea of lowflying missions. The photo's of NustyR are arty farty in the lighting conditions and the composition ( klm 747 landing into the sunset and the rare formation of an aircraft and the geese ) these shots make u wonder how in the hell was he able to make that composition. Two examples of special/original way to picture aviation are given by Cristian Schrik i would say.( the helmet in front of the PDF line up and the F-16 in the sunglasses.)

As metioned earlier I am not able to produce arty farty at this point, but i am surely inspired by this topic to at least give it a try in the future. Detail shots are in my mind hard to qualify as arty farty.

These were just my few cents, not meant to p*ss people off, just meant to express a poor guys definition of arty farty.

regards Pete
