Plane crashes into house in New York state

Post by Bokkum »

A plane crashed into a house in Clarence Center, a suburb of Buffalo, New York, on late Thursday, according to authorities.

Local media reported that the plane was Continental Flight 3407 from Newark, New Jersey, carrying 48 passengers, according to the FAA. The aircraft has seating capacity of 74, officials said.

The plane went down shortly after 10 p.m., hitting a home and bursting into a fireball, according to New York State Trooper John Manthey. The wreckage from the plane is still smoldering.

The accident took place about seven miles from Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
Two people on the ground were reported to have minor injuries.

There was a light mix of snow and sleet at the time of the crash, officials said.
At this time, officials said they are not concerned about a hazardous materials situation on the ground

Left EWR at 19.45 lct, 35 minutes behind scedule and was operated by subordinary Colgan Air(CO3407) with one of their DASH Q8-400's. ( According to flight tracker). No more information at the moment.

Extra info: according to latest CNN Newsflash should be N375PH ( only thing that's a 202 instead of a 400) and thats a plane of Commutair which is also operating for CO.

That's indeed a 400 of Colgan. So CNN uses the wrong picture with regi. Still lots of speculations in the media.

On another channel I saw a picture of a stored SAS Dash 8, so as long as they do not show pictures of the wreckage, you can almost be sure it is not a picture of the plane involved.

Short resume of all the speculations at CNN: It seems that the weather is playing a great role in this crash. Reported is that several planes at approach and departure were picking up ice at lower FL's ( under 7000 ft.) Ice-clouds were building up to 11.000 ft. The Dash was at its final approach at 3 miles from the runway at 1100 ft when it tumbled down from the air and crashed.

Investigations will show us the direct cause of the crash.

By the way: At airfleets.net is already confirmed that the N200WQ is written-off in this crash. Colgan operates 15 Q-400's minus this one and 37 Saab's A340 with 5 more in storage

To me, this looks like the final blow to the Dash 8-Q400. Can't think of another type in recent history that suffered from a reputation this bad.
