Hi,
Several internet browsers, including Firefox (version 2 and higher) and MS Internet Explorer (version 7 and higher), have a search bar (or Instant Search box as Microsoft calls it) in the top right corner.
With this search bar you can start searching the internet (using Google etc), or search through specific sites, without the need to first browse to those sites. This is a technique called OpenSearch.
As of today you can also use this search bar to search the Scramble Message Board!!!
First you need to tell your browser where to search...
But luckily we already did most of the work for you, so only thing you need to do is 'install' it.
When you look at this search bar, you will see that to the left of it there is a small blue dot (in Firefox), or on the right a small orange dot (in Internet Explorer), both around the little arrow with which you can select the site you would like to search (RSS readers first need to visit the site itself of course!);
...
When you click on this arrow, in Firefox you can click straight on "Add 'Scramble Forums'", in Internet Explorer you first have to click on "Add Search Providers", after which you can select "Scramble Forums" (and then acknowledge you want to add it);
...
Don't forget to make it your default search engine ( ), and you're off!!
Hope this is an useful extension for our valued users!
Regards,
Hans

Actually, I could click at Scramble Forums immediately, and one quick try showed that this worked to.Hans wrote:in Internet Explorer you first have to click on "Add Search Providers", after which you can select "Scramble Forums" (and then acknowledge you want to add it);

Probably you have different security settings or something like that then.... To be honest, I even don't use IE myself, had somebody else check it (long time user of FF; first with tabbed browsing, first with this search bar thingy, first ... )aviodromefriend wrote:Actually, I could click at Scramble Forums immediately, and one quick try showed that this worked to.

I think you're going past a few other browsers too easily, with Opera being the largest.Hans wrote:(long time user of FF; first with tabbed browsing, first with this search bar thingy, first ... )

Ard (very long-time Opera user, that sometimes get's annoyed with Firefox users who claim untrue firsts. )
PS. When this function is re-instated, I will try if it works with Opera as well.

Hi Ard,
Not sure about the tabbed browsing, you're probably right, but pretty confident about the OpenSearch functionality.
But at least FF preceded IE with all of these functions

(or was this when they still tried to charge money for Opera? )adz wrote:I think you're going past a few other browsers too easily, with Opera being the largest.

That would be great!adz wrote:PS. When this function is re-instated, I will try if it works with Opera as well.

From Wikipedia:Hans wrote: Not sure about the tabbed browsing
Opera was the first internet browser to offer tabbed browsing. Agreed that money-charging thing wasn't a very good idea (though there were always ways to get rid of the banners ), but that was after the tabs.
You're probably right about the Search-thingy.
But I encourage everyone to use the browser they like, unless it's IE.
Good luck on the maintenance tonight!

Re: Search this forum using the Search Bar / Instant Search box
Well, found out that there's no 'add ....-button' in Opera for this ( ), but if you just go to the search page and right-click in the search box and click on 'add search engine' or whatever the english version says (Hm, why do I have the dutch version installed?), it works just fine.
But this doesn't change my preference for Opera one bit. (btw, does FF support mouse gestures?)

Re: Search this forum using the Search Bar / Instant Search box
People should realise IE is the M$ Office browser. That means partly non-standard Internet behaviour to accomodate compatibility with the rest of Office.adz wrote:unless it's IE.

Re: Search this forum using the Search Bar / Instant Search box
All,
As a side note; we recently also started upgrading and extending the Wiki software, but this is still work in progress, so more on that later in the appropriate places.
But what already works is the same "OpenSearch" functionality;
Just go to the Wiki and using the same trick you can add this search engine.
Nice feature of this particular search engine is it is able to start giving "Suggestions" as soon as you start entering your search string in the search bar (something which unfortunately is not possible with this Message Board).
