Jumbo jets are back in Russia: Rossiya plans to reintroduce its Boeing 747s by 2025

Sergei Alexandrovsky , CEO of Aeroflot Group ,
has confirmed that Rossiya will resume operations with its Boeing 747 aircraft in 2025.
The announcement was made during the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok,
which will mark the return of the iconic jet
at a time when there is a shortage of aircraft in Russia.
Alexandrovsky revealed to Interfax reports
that the model is being prepared for return to flight.
“Next year they will fly again. The number of aircraft will be known after we take them out of storage.
This type of aircraft will continue to be operated within the group, by Rossiya,” Alexandrovsky said.
As of the end of June 2024,
five Boeing 747s were registered with the Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsia.
According to RuAviation,
three of these aircraft ( RA-73283 , RA-73286 and RA-73289 ) have valid airworthiness certificates,
while the rest have been in storage since the pandemic.
Currently, some of these aircraft are undergoing maintenance to prepare them for their return to service.
Rossiya previously operated nine 747s on domestic and international routes, particularly during peak tourist seasons. All of these aircraft still retain dual registration, with efforts underway to remove them from the Irish registry.
The airline acquired seven Boeing 747-400s from Transaero Airlines in 2016 and two more in 2017. These aircraft were initially expected to be decommissioned by the end of 2023.
