It ended up in the water, though. A costly rebuild or a write-off?

Yesterday's press release from USN say they hope to repair the P-8 and return it to service due to very little damage occurring. Time will tell if that actually happens.

Salt water contamination/corrosion is likely to be the deciding factor on any repair.
Being that the airplane is a MPA working in a salty enviroment anyway, a repair would seem to be likely.

Back in the 60s, when I was a wee lad, JAL Flight 2 (DC-8-62) landed/ditched/crashed more than a mile short of the runway at SFO in 7' of water. We could actually see it from our backyard, and my dad drove us down to the park where the passengers disembarked from their life rafts to see it closer up.
They craned it out after 55 hours in the water, barged it to United's heavy maintenance facility at SFO, and less than 12 months later it was back in the air.
