LOG US (MIL) Jan / Feb

Post by Oscar01 »

At the end of January, we went to the US for some spotting. Our main goal got cancelled just days prior to our visit, but nevertheless, there was still a lot to see. This time it was quality not quantity, for example the whole day at Barksdale, we saw, besides the great museum, just 3 flying buffs (but with 3 different tail codes!).
We flew to Atlanta on Sunday, and started Monday at Fort Rucker. Bit foggy, but after that, sunny skies! As they didn’t fly around 10.00 we went on to Eglin. After reading a lot at the different AHPs.

A remark upfront: almost 99% of the serials are on picture (not the Stennis ones), feel free to add comments, share info on missing serials or ask questions :D

The pity thing here is that all UH-1s are parked in a way that the tail rotor is blocking the serial, and noses could not be seen (serial on nose as well). The 4 Blackhawks were also parked the wrong way.

The other Lakota heaven AHP is Shell. Bit more difficult to read. So in the end you end up with quite some serials or codes only.

30-1-2023 Knox AHP
This AHP also is outside the big Fort Rucker boundaries. However, this neighborhood does not like spotters or photographers! So (just like previous times) this was a real hit-and-run. From a small corner you can see a nice line of Chinooks and with digital camera, easy to take pictures from serials and be gone in just a minute. On the opposite side of the field was another row, but we could only read two of those….

After this, we drove to Eglin for the afternoon. Quite a few test birds flew. We found out that for the rest of the week both the test squadron and 1 of the F-35 squadrons were on night flying.

Not bad for just the first day 😊. On the second day we went to Tyndall to see if there was anything on tdy here. Pitty, not much, just 5 F-35Bs on cross county (they left for St. Louis). 2 ATAC F-16s and 3 Mirage F-1s remained unread. So after this, we went back to Eglin. Glad the F-35s were flying a lot more!

One F-35B was not read off. Spotting opportunities are not great here. We drove by the base few times to get some QF-16 numbers, and saw that E-9A. They have a very very nice donut shop just on the other side of the bridge though 😊

That tail of 84-0018 looked very weird, almost the same like the new F-15X. The T-38s came back from another location in FL.

1-2-2023 Eglin
Today they were testing some rockets at Eglin. But weather was not good, misty, so we soon decided to go to Rucker again, as they were flying a lot and we still needed some good shots.

The herc was testing stuff above sea (had some rare lines attached to it). 3 F-22s flew early mission and came in via RW20 (which is not too bad in the mornings, but not with fog like today).

1-2-2023 Allen Stagefield
Then we went to Rucker again. The plan was to do some hit-and-runs at some stagefields. Be aware, these are *not* like the Dutch GLV, or UK SPTA, where you can easily go. Our hobby is not appreciated by 99% of the locals or military guys. So don’t stay too long, don’t be in the open too much. Allen probably is one of the easiest with multiple spots around where you can shoot from. And with at some times 8 to 10 in the circuit, busy!

Here the light is not that good, as from the main road, you’re facing the sun. You can go to the approach end on 1 side, and just walk there till the sun is in your back. However, from this road they are a bit high….

2-2-2023 Gulfport
Today we had to drive a few miles, so we decided to do some small stops, as the wx wasn’t that good today. Arrived at Gulfport, we saw a few heavies here. There probably was some kind of army(?) exercise as the entire week quite some hercs and C-17s flew in and out. The 2 Keesler hercs were here because of runway repairs at Keesler.

2-2-2023 Stennis
THE highlight of the trip was this place. We knew upfront that there were Japanese Ospreys inside hangars and F-18s from Kuwait as well, but did not expect to see any of them. Don’t as how (exact story is not for here), but we managed to see them! I put the ex bunos as well, as they were still on the ospreys as well. We were told by our guide that there were 6 Ospreys at that moment (so we had them all). Not sure how many F-18s as we only went to the big hangar, so there might have been few more in the other (some say 22 in total, some say 26).

We drove by 2 AHPs but zero was seen…..

Today was a quality day. Just like next Monday (Dyess) we would love to see some of the bombers fly. Besides, we were cleared to visit the on base museum, which was also nice. We only saw 3 buffs flying, but luckily they were a LA, BD and OT one! And some numbers were read on the ramps.
But before Barksdale, we started with a quick look at Waco. Very misty! There were also a number of (former Jordanian?) F-1s all packed up. No serials seen.

During the weekend, Fort Worth is always interesting with a few bases active. Meacham also has a very very interesting museum!

6-2-2023 Dyess
Today was another bomber day! We went to Dyess. They have a very impressive museum (on base) and after contacting the director and the normal checks, you can get a tour. We also go a flightline tour (windshield), but no cameras allowed. As for flying, not that much. 3 B-1s and 4 C-130Js. But some trainers shooting approaches as well. Still, seeing B-1s take off and land is very impressive!

In the afternoon we already drove to Sheppard. Great base, but taking pictures not too easy. Because of weather changing, we only were here for an hour late afternoon on the 6th.

Quite some instructional airframes seen. Also the B-52 was seen, no serial read though.

What a base!!! Because of weather (we were right between an ice storm and a warm weather front, so very grey in the morning) we had to re-shuffle our route a bit. But flying was amazing! They use 3 runways at the same time, so non-stop action. They flew RW17, so we were standing in the south east corner near the taxi track. Had some check from Security Forces, but no problem to take pictures. An easy 120+ serials read. Where as we would have had more if we did beat the heat waves….

The weather was not that great. We were right in the middle between cold and warm weather (again), so grey and icy in the afternoon. Altus is a nice base, quite some locals flew. And good to see the KC-46s getting tail markings…

Today was a quality day again! E-3s, E-6ses and number of 135s! Also quite some numbers on the ground were seen for depot. Bat43 came in for depot work, and 44 was the return flight home for the crew (after 30min of pattern work).
The KC-10 and 2 Eurofighters came straight overhead at 20000ft. Serials taken from adsb.

10-2-2023 Fort Worth Alliance
The final day of our trip already! After 5.000+km, some very nice stories, loads of pictures and planes, we headed first to Alliance to check what was there (and were not disappointed!) and to JRB after that.

The blackhawks were a nice surprise and lined up near the fence. They departed during the morning (according to adsb).

10-2-2023 Fort Worth JRB
The last one was a nice one! We were told that the visitors for the change of command would depart on Saturday, but very nice for us, they departed this Friday afternoon. Those F-5s were nice!!! The navy T-6ses were flying around the entire week. When we were about to leave, the TX Vipers came back, and something was weird with their callsign (re)numbering. So we decided just to check them, and all of a sudden there was a FM F-16 with them! All in all, very nice trip with loads of highlights and good fun!

Excellent log..... happened to be at Dyess the 6th as well only in the afternoon.... a few remarks 85-0073 flew as CROOK01 an 86-0118 must be a mis-read as this 37 BS EL bird was transferred to AMARG

Correct. We noted 86-0118/EL at AMARG on Jan 26th, 2023. She is first in a line of B-1's on the east side of AMARG. See below.

Great log of an awesome trip Oz

One small mix up I have noticed
62-3544 KC-135R Bat44 < is in for maintenance
59-1519 KC-135R Bat43 < was the one that returned with the crew

Thanks for helping me get my KC-135 sheet back in shape 😊
