Help with aircraft type, USS Midway Museum Restoration area, NAS North Island

Post by David Moore »

Hi All,

Visible on Google Maps at 32.70822951509778, -117.21632818865666 is the centre and forward fuselage of an aircraft I can't identify. Can any of you help with identifying the type, please?

This was, I believe, seen by me from the boat tour on 04.03.2022.

Thank you very much,

David

I'm not that good at google maps, but if you mean the bird next to the F/A-18 in Blue Angels scheme, that's an (almost) complete Vought F7U Cutlass...

Always going forward... still can't find reverse!

That's a Cutlass indeed.
Might be prototype F7U-3 BuNo 128451.
(to be combined with BuNo 129565, to make one complete aircraft)
Cheers,
Johannes Berger

Thank you for your contributions. I think that it was probably the fuselage of a Cutlass. The Google Maps image must be from a while ago, as now there is an F-4 and a Blue Angels F/A-18C in that area, plus a nearly complete Cutlass.

The fuselage I am interested in has a HUD in the cockpit so I doubt it is that of the second Cutlass.
