Kyrgyz ministry officially confirms U.S. plane crash
BISHKEK. May 3 (Interfax) - The Kyrgyz Emergency Situations Ministry has officially confirmed that a U.S. KC-135 refueling tanker crashed in the mountains near the border with Kazakhstan.

"We officially confirm the crash of a cargo airplane near the Kazakh border," a ministry spokesman in Kyrgyzstan's Chuy Province told Interfax.

"The plane caught fire in mid-air, exploded and fell down," he said.

Witnesses said they saw the plane, believed to have been laden with fuel at the time, explode in mid-air.
"When it was falling, the plane split into three pieces,"

The wreckage is scattered across a wide area. US officials said: "The status of the crew is unknown".

The scene of the crash was being guarded overnight, and officials said a search for the missing crew members would resume in the morning.

The front section of the aircraft has not yet been found, Kyrgyz Emergencies Minister Kubatbek Boronov told The Associated Press.

He said searchers also have not found the flight recorders from the plane, which was badly burned in the crash.
