exclusive scrapping of the "Landshut" is to be prevented

Foreign Minister Gabriel calls the airplane abducted in 1977 a "living witness" of the story: The Boeing 737 stands flugunfähig in Brazil, the scrapping threatens.
The Federal Foreign Office is signaling its willingness to help.

Four decades after the abduction and storming of the Lufthansa aircraft "Landshut" in October 1977,
efforts are being made in the federal government and in the CDU leadership
to prevent the decay and potentially threatening scrapping of the 47-year-old machine.

After a decade of deployment as a passenger and later as a cargo aircraft,
the now renamed "Landshut" has been flying incapable and in a moderate condition in the Brazilian Fortaleza.
It is said to be auctioned with other aircraft in March.

Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel told the FAZ: "The 'Landshut' is stranded at the end of its active life in Latin America and will never fly again, but it is a living witness of an important moment in the history of the young Federal Republic."

"We want to see how we can help remember the 'Landshut' and keep it at this difficult time."
Gabriel recalled the "dramatic wanderlust" of the abducted "Landshut",
the liberation movement in Mogadishu,
the threat Through the RAF terrorism,
the "relief on the liberation" of the people on board and the mourning for the victims.

Finished plans for the possible purchase and return of "Landshut" do not seem to exist in the federal government yet.

Deputy CDU Federal President Julia Klöckner advocates the purchase of the aircraft by Germany.

"There are good reasons for our country to buy the aircraft in the forthcoming auction action," she told the FAZ.
The "Landshut", the successful liberation of the hostages, the handling of terrorism were "a piece of time history".

According to http://hessenschau.de/gesellschaft/40-j ... n-100.html the former US Army Airfield Griesheim, near Darmstadt (south of Frankfurt) is a possible location to park this aircraft.

According to reports in the local press this morning, the new home for the "Landshut" is going to be the Dornier Museum in Friedrichshafen.

David Dornier, Director of the Dornier Museum,
confirmed on Friday that his family would be willing to exhibit the Lufthansa machine " Landshut ",
which has been flying for years in Brazilian Fortaleza, in the Dornier Museum.

On Friday it was announced that the federal government bought the machine.

It is regarded as a symbol of the "German Autumn", the year 1977 of the terror of the RAF in the Federal Republic.

The "Landshut" had been kidnapped by four Palestinians on 13th October 1977 - they wanted to detain imprisoned RAF members.

After a "dramatic random flight", as recently expressed by Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel , the machine was stormed by a GSG-9 command in the Somali Mogadishu on 18 October.

Three of the four kidnappers were killed, a GSG-9 man and a stewardess were injured. Previously, the hostage pilots had shot Jürgen Schumann.

Until the mid-1980s, the "Landshut" flew to the service of Lufthansa .

After that, it was sold and flew for different airlines, most recently for a Brazilian.

Since 2008 she has been in Fortaleza. Efforts to bring the "Landshut" back to Germany had long failed.

Experts estimate the return and restoration of the aircraft with around one million euros. :|

The purchase price of the machine, on the other hand, was only around 20,000 euros, according to the newspaper "Folha de S. Paulo".

Other applicants

Several cities, according to SWR information, had most recently shown interest in exhibiting the machine, including Landshut and Flensburg.

In addition, the Häfler Dornier Museum also appears to be applying.

Dornier Museum Director David Dornier also mentioned a condition for this in the SZ conversation:
"If we had such a monument for our museum, it would be great.

However :!: , others would have to pay for the restoration.

Neither the Dornier Museum nor the Foundation can spend money on this, especially since we are currently negotiating with the city of Friedrichshafen.

As we know, we want the city to help us. That is why we can not spend money on the 'Landshut'. "

One had been in Dornier for months, because of the "Landshut".

"Even if the machine does not really suit us, there is a connecting point: In July 1986, an attack on Dornier was committed.
A confessional letter pointed to the RAF environment.

In my opinion, the 'Landshut' belongs to Baden-Württemberg. We need more attention, more visitors, and do everything to get more visitors to the city of Friedrichshafen.

With us the "Landshut" would get a good and worthy place. "

Dornier wants to make it clear to the Federal Foreign Office that this "important German topic" does not belong to a private hangar,
but must be accessible to the general public and made available to them.

"We want our part to contribute to the fact that this monument is not scrapped," emphasizes Dornier.

According to the museum director, the "Landshut" should be restored to its original state and then be located outside the museum.

"The machine is not easy to set up," says Dornier.
Apparently there is already a museum concept at Lake Constance, the museum director himself speaks of "very good ideas".

In the documentation of the history of the "Landshut" he hopes for support from the "House of History".
And then David Dornier says, "I've heard the story of the Landshut as a young man.
It's important that someone cares. "

The "Landshut" will be transported to Friedrichshafen in September (by Antonov) and should go on display already in October.
On 18OCT there will be a ceremony, remembering the liberation of the hostages exactly 40 years ago that day.

The fuselage of "Landshut" will arrive in Friedrichshafen on 23SEP around 09.00lt on board of an An124. 4 hours later an Il76 with the wings and tail will arrive.

The Dornier Museum is not willing to bear the costs for displaying the "Landshut", so maybe in the end she might have to move and will not be displayed in Friedrichshafen.

Neuer Standort gesucht

Landet die 1977 entführte Lufthansa-Maschine "Landshut" bald am Kassel Airport?

21.09.19 - 10:00
