Su-24 shot down near Syrian/Turkish border

Post by Flanker »

Turkish media reported a plane crashed in Syria (close to Turkish border).
It was shot down by Turkey, after violating Turkey's airspace.
Unknown to which country it belongs.
2 pilots apparently ejected and parachuted to safety.

Indeed, looks like Su-24. According to Turkish tv it should be Syrian.

Although looking similar, it might, indeed, be a MiG-23.
Look at this video footage (below).

The profile shows the caracteritic massive tail of a MiG.
The above (or below view) shows 2 details :
- the empty space under the rudder, that does not exist on a Su-24.
- the opened wing angle. If it was a Su-24, it should look like 90°

Both Russia and Turkey confirmed it was a Russian Su-24, with Russian pilots

Russian Defence Ministry admit it is a Russian aircraft.

The also deny it was over the Turkish border before shut down.

The pilots were warned 10 times during five minutes before the shoot down.

Heavy ground fighting is ongoing close to the crash area.

Turkey take up the matter for discussions via UN?

Dutch media is hinting that the Su-24 was approaching Turkish airspace. I wonder how legitimate it is to down an aircraft that is only approaching your airspace, but not actually enters it... even if warned.
