At least 10 people lost their lives when two helicopters collided in mid-air in Villa Castelli, some 200 kilometres from the capital of La Rioja province.

The crash occurred shortly after 5pm, and it is believed that all those onboard the two crafts at the time of collision perished.

The deceased were part of a team from the Discovery Channel, who were filming a documentary in the area. According to reports, at least one of the helicopters belonged to the government of La Rioja.

Two helicopters have crashed in north-west Argentina, killing at least 10 people during the filming of a TV programme, police say.

They crashed near the provincial centre, Villa Castelli, 1,170km (720 miles) from Buenos Aires, Security Secretary Cesar Angulo said.

The authorities believe the helicopters may have collided, he added.

Local media say the passengers were French, taking part in an international endurance and survival competition.

The contest takes place each year in the province and is televised internationally.

Both pilots were also killed, local media report. One helicopter reportedly belonged to the provincial authorities.
