The shelter area at Ramstein has recently been refurbished if I'm not mistaken....
Remember that Spagdahlem housed four fightersquadrons only 15 years or so ago. No need to move the sold remaining F-16 squadron IMHO!

The US Air Force has had bad experiences with housing fast and slow moving types at one base in the past (ie. very deadly incident at Pope AFB). Moving the F-16s further east or south (not Ramstein) would also fit into a bigger strategy picture.
Answers will be questioned.....

Does the USAF still have a base in Italy? Or is this the tactical way to create a fast-jet base in Riga/Tallinn area?

The planned move of 300 troops to Italy probably refers to that F-16 Sqn at Spangdahlem going to Aviano.

Regarding USAF in Portugal, during this year it will reduce 485 of its military personnel assigned to BA4 at Lages and dispense 500 of the 900 civilian (local) workers. That means a huge loss in yearly-GDP for Azores! :(

The planned move of 300 tropps to Italy is related to the 606th ACS and not the 480th FS.

According Flugzeug Forum
Following the relocation of the 606th ACS, Spandgdahlem AB will receive the 352nd Special Operations Group, currently located at RAF Mildenhall. This move will include about 10 CV-22s and 10 MC-130J aircraft, and associated personnel.
For the benefit of Mr. Kite, there will be a show tonight on trampoline

But they've had plenty of good ones too ....
Disaster can struck any given time, as can mistakes.
As for the 480th ... They seem to deploy more than fly from Spangdahlem it self ...

But as Always time will tell.

Question how will local German's take the news of having an extra 15 KC-135's operating from Ramstein, and the noisy CV-22 at Spangahlem?????

Thought the Germans were very noise sensitive ?????????

Can't really see Ramstein shelters being any use for the KC-135's....

Well if they have something like a noise quota it surely will not be met at neather Ramstein or Spangdahlem these days! :-)

I think Prestwick will gone see a lot more traffic as last hub before the big crossing over the Atlantic ocean.
But we still got a few years to go !!.

Both Ramstein & Spang have sufficient ramp space to house these units already. No doubt new infra structure and housing will be foreseen in the near future to make it more comfortable. As for the noise, I doubt the extra 15 KC's would have any effect on the noise levels at Ramstein as the number of local aircraft (and transient aircraft) dwindled down in the past few years.
As for Spangdahlem also also the traffic is downsized quite a lot compared to back in the early 2000's when there was a full complement of 4 squadron's (around 90 local aircraft). Yes, the noise level of a CV-22 is different to an A-10, but then again, it's considerable less noicy compared to an F-15 or F-16 for that matter.

In my opinion it's a logical decision and I welcome the transfer. It makes it more worth our while to visit Spang and Ramstein again.
