Re: Grosseto (LIRS) - 2014
Some additional info:
We stayed at Agriturismo Il Querciolo with actual sight on the South side of the base. (recommended: includes airco, swimming pool and bikes!)
99% of the time take-off takes place from North to South ('to the sea').
Subsequently, landings 99% of the time take place from South to North ('from the sea'), which means you can read all aircraft from your balcony... (except when the wind is strong, wind direction doesn't mean a lot at Grosseto).
You best go to the landingsite by bike. There is a dirtroad between the provincial road Poggiale and the Strada del Querciolo. It is marked as 'strada privato' (private road), but I always had accces and even farmers (with their huge vehicules!) passing by didn't object to it. Sometimes local Italian families park their car near/at the dirtroad (even between the landing lights).
Carabinieri sometimes drive by on the Strada Poggiale, but that's just it: they drive by, turn around at the roundabout near the hotels and then just drive back. They didn't even stop when all these Italians parked near the landinglights. According to some locals I spoke to on the dirtroad, Carabinieri never cause problems here, they might only act when you park your car on the wrong spot... So, I didn't dodge of dive... No need to panic, I've been there 2 weeks out in the open
Only the departure of the Spanish EF's was captured on the Strada der Querciolo where the roads bends from the shelter area to the city ('in the corner'). I took pictures there with my 300mm lense (so I had to crop); you actually would need a 400-500mm lense there. Pictures I took on the spots on the map were taken at 190-250mm.
A 200mm lense would do! I can't give information about the North side, but as far as I could see there are some dirtroads as well.
All the best,
Rob.

Re: Grosseto (LIRS) - 2014
Great pictures and very good explanations, Rob. That earns you a "well done". May I forward your formation shot to the 4 Stormo association?
On the other hand, it's good to see that you did not have any problems. When I started visiting Grosseto in the mid-ninetees, my first encounter with the carabineri was not so nice. It ended with me lying in the dirt (spread eagle figure), with two maschine-pistols pointing at me. And it took my friend at the base (No 2 in the Stormo) more than 15 minutes to persuade the carabinieri boss that they should let me go again. Luckily times have changed!
