Defense Minister Celso Amorim and General Juniti Saito, the air force's chief of staff, will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. EST, for the official announcement.
The decision puts an end to 10 years of speculation and delays on the transaction, which started as a plan under former President Luiz Inácio de Lula. Three contenders stepped up to the bid: France’s Dassault (EPA:AM), with the Rafale model; Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) with the F/A-18 e/F Super Hornet; and the eventual winners, Saab with the smaller Gripen. In the early stages of the negotiation, Lula expressed preference for the Rafale, but the French contender fell out of favor at the end of Lula's second and last term in 2010, and was finally rejected on Tuesday due to its high cost.
Boeing was considered the stronger bid, but following the revelation that the U.S. National Security Agency had been spying on Brazilian officials and companies, including on the president herself, the relationship between Brazil and the U.S. frayed. Rousseff even canceled a visit to the White House, scheduled for September, as a show of protest.

Initial delivery of 12 planes delivers within 48 months. The rest deliveries of 12 planes each year, with 36 planes within 3 years. Further details not present, as version etc.
The Swedish Air Force order is 60 Saab JAS39E Gripen.
The Brazil order was in air. Brazil ordered Saab newly a further rebuilding of the air defence system, which involve Eireye.
Saab has not yet presented any confirmation information.

Source: Saab Brazil's decision to procure the Saab JAS 39 Gripen E to satisfy its F-X2 fighter replacement programme has breathed new life into the company's Sea Gripen concept, a source told IHS Jane's on 19 December.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said that the deal for 36 aircraft for the Brazilian Air Force "opens up a whole new realm of possibilities" for the Sea Gripen, with the Navy having a notional requirement for 24 aircraft to operate from its Sao Paulo aircraft carrier.
Having targeted the concept at Brazilian and Indian naval requirements, Saab now has a programmatic and industrial presence in one of those countries giving it an invaluable foothold with which to promote its Sea Gripen.
Further to the opportunities afforded by the F-X2 deal, the source told IHS Jane's that discussions with India have been taking place behind the scenes. "There has been a conversation with the Indian Navy, which is looking at the Sea Gripen separate to the [Indian Air Force] MMRCA [Medium MultiRole Combat Aircraft requirement]," he said, adding: "The Indian Navy [interest in Sea Gripen] never went away."
First revealed by Saab in 2010, the Sea Gripen concept features a number of navalised enhancements to the baseline Gripen E fighter to make it suitable for carrier operations. These include a strengthened undercarriage, bigger brakes, and a beefed-up tail hook.
The standard Gripen already has a large number of the attributes for carrier operations, such as a high precision landing capability, a high pitch and roll rate authority and precision glide slope control, a reinforced airframe and enhanced anti-corrosion protection. Its undercarriage and airframe is already capable of a sink rate of 15 ft/s, though this would need to be increased to about 25 ft/s for carrier operations.
As Saab is pitching the Sea Gripen for 'short take-off, but arrested recovery' (STOBAR) operations, it does not need to be equipped with the nosewheel-mounted launch bar required for 'catapult-assisted take-off, but arrested recovery' (CATOBAR) ships. As such, it could operate from both types of carriers, making it a suitable option for the Indian Navy's STOBAR ships INS Viraat and INS Vikramaditya , and future indigenous carrier; as well as the Brazilian Navy's CATOBAR Sao Paulo (it should be noted that the lack of a 'ski jump' on this ship might present issues in terms of the Sea Gripen's maximum take-off weight).
According to the source, Saab has completed all of the feasibility studies for the Sea Gripen and now just requires a launch customer to fund further development and production. While Brazil's F-X2 announcement does not yet provide this, its implications could be very fortuitous for the concept. As the source put it to IHS Jane's ; "The Brazilian deal currently changes nothing [for the Sea Gripen], but could change everything."

Only part of 36 Saab JAS 39 Gripen E/F the Brazilian Air Force will order are going to be build in Linköping, Sweden. The biggest Latin American country will construct many Swedish designed fighter jets itself, and even more than the ordered 36 to resell the combat aircraft to other nations in Latin America and Africa. In the meantime Brazil will lease the JAS 39C/D Gripen that will come from the current surplus or strength of the Swedish Air Force. The negotiations are not ready, but according info is 80% of the planes to be built in Brazil.
That is Saab who negotiate directly with Brazil. Swedish government are not directly involved. In the Swiss order is the Swedish government much more involved.
The order has a research and development part. The both parts participate both more together in the development programthan other combat aircraft deliveries.
Sweden have ordered 60 JAS 39E, and no JAS 39F.

The order planes are to be 36 Gripen E. A possible solution with some Gripen F are ongoing, if the operations need one. Not to use for training purpose.

According to a local newspaper in Sao Paulo the Swedish Air Force might buy the EMBRAER EMB.314 Super Tucano to replace the Sk.60 . Any of the swedish readers who can confirm this?

Saab offered 2009 to use Brazil Tucano in Swedish Air Force if Brazil choose JAS 39 Gripen.
The SK 60 is today "updated at least to 2017", if Brazil buy JAS 39 Gripen.

I think that the idea is to have the Super Tucano ordered for delivery from 2016.... so it fits in the idea that the Sk.60 has received a up-date to soldier on to 2017! By the time the Super Tucano's are being delivered in quantities.... we will live in the year 2017-2018. Some interesting price info now known involving the Gripen purchase, now the deal is sealed. The deal is worth 4.25Bn Euros, which is 118 million euros per plane, or 149,7 million dollar per Gripen.

The agreement includes industrial cooperation and technology transfer.
The value of the deal, first announced in December last year, amounted to 39.3 billion kronor (4.25 billion euros, $5.39 billion).
"We are proud to stand side-by-side with Brazil in this important programme," Saab chairman Marcus Wallenberg said in a statement.
Brazil and Sweden will be the first countries to use the new generation of Gripen fighter jets.
"The contract with Brazil validates Gripen as the most capable and modern fighter system on the market," chief executive Haakan Buskhe said.
The contract, which includes 28 single-seat and eight two-seat aircraft, is expected to come into effect during the first half of 2015.
The fighter jets will be delivered between 2019 and 2024.
Last May, Swiss voters rejected a deal proposed by their government to buy 22 Gripen of a different model.
This new contract secures "Gripen's industrial and operational future into the 2050 timeframe," the company said.
Gripen fighter jets are currently used by the Swedish, Czech, Hungarian, South African and Thai aviations.
