Mönchengladbach Airport - who cares?

Hey all,

Mönchengladbach is not often visited by spotters as there are bigger and perhaps more interesting airports such as Düsseldorf or Cologne around.
But "EDLN" has some quite interesting visitors aswell!

For sure, it is a question of your interest - military aircraft for example are rare to see. But you can expect some commuter aircraft (mostly ATR42/72 for maintenance), businessjets or helicopters.
Further, there are some nice historical aircraft based like biplanes or the Ju52 "HB-HOY".


Here some spottingpositions:

Spot 1: Rheinland Air Service (maintenance)
Spot 2: ramp / approach 31
Spot 3: approach 13 / stored Fokker27 "D-AELL"
Spot 4: fuel station

There are many further spots easy to find by yourself along the fence- as always, a small ledder would be fine.


Here my result of last Monday (30.09.2013), easterly winds:

In total, 11 ATR's were visible on the ramp, further more in the hangar.

The Ju52 was covered, but it will fly for the last time in this season on 12.10./13.10.2013:

By the way, there is a nice cafe where you can eat and drink something directly at spot 2...

I must admit I have never been there, but it is indeed high on my list of (nearby) fields to visit. Especially because of the ATR maintenance facility. So many thanks for providing this info, will surely be helpful when I finally get the chance to visit! Much appreciated!

Nice to see an airworthy RW-3! I've seen another one recently, in the Technikmuseum in Berlin. And I also remember the Broncos and other interesting stuff in the lste seventies

I always visit MGB after Düsseldorf and/or Cologne, often with a good result.

MGL is also usually on my list when in the area. Here one from 13/Sep/13. Near spot #2 but then the other side of the terminal where you can see in between some of the hangars.

Nice to see that some of you are also interested in this small airport :wink:

SE-DEY is most probably stored, I never saw it in action but this aircraft is there perhaps since a year, maybe longer...
It seems that the ATR's of RAM Express also are stored, like most of the ATR's in MGL at the moment.

Broncos... Yes, I heard of it, but it's before my "spotting career"! Perhaps one of you have some pics to show?
Can't imagine these birds in MGL :shock:

I often visit MGL.

It's a airport with low movements and limmited spotting positions. Sometimes military aircraft are seen. Helicopter traffic is low and mostly concentrated near the hanger of Rhein Ruhr Helicopters (very hard to spot).

Saw a Royal Navy Jetstream and Algerian Air Force Fokker 27 here in the past.

As MGL is on my route to DUS, a allways make a short stop.
